A&A: The Adventures of Archer and Armstrong #10

Dec 31, 1969

Rafer Roberts (Harbinger Renegades) and Mike Norton (B.R.P.D.: Hell on Earth)are juggling a lot of balls in this story. Few other people would bring all these clashing concept and characters together. In other hands, the wheels would be coming off this thing by page three, but Roberts and Norton balance the story out so that is easy to follow despite all the different elements. The jokes are actually funny and come in a mix of visual gags, weird situations and the verbal clash of personalities among the good guys as well as the villains.

Action Comics (2016) #986

Aug 23, 2017

There are a lot of theories floating around out there over the real identity of Mr. Oz. I haven't been taking part in them, mainly because, so many of them would be so disappointing if they turn out to be true. Williams drops another clue in this issue as he makes it clear that Mr. Oz is smarter than Luthor and there are so few characters who fit that bill. It looks like all the wild speculation will end next month when it looks like Mr. Oz will reveal himself.

This is a good read for while you are in line or waiting for the trailers when you go see the Guardians' movie this weekend.

Amazing Spider-Man (2015) #28

Jun 9, 2017

This has been a quick and fun story arc that Slott and Immonen have put together. It doesn't have the operatic complexities of Slott's Clone Conspiracy story, but by focusing on the anger Peter Parker and Norman Osbourne have for each other, the rest of the battle just become a proxy for their ideals which are quickly lost in their own fight. The first issue of the arc was a little shaky for me, but the end is well worth it. Go back and read all four together.

Atomic Robo: Spectre of Tomorrow #1

Nov 2, 2017

If you are familiar with Atomic Robo, you can be assured you are in for a fun ride with humor and adventure. Clevinger and Wegener are careful with their placement of humor so that it works to support the drama of the story and not undercut it. The advantage they have in building these five issue arc is that they make it easy for new reader to jump on board and join in the fun without having to worry about all the previous adventures. If they like the story they can always go through the back catalogue.

One of the things that is great about the Atomic Robo stories is that new readers can pick up any story and have no problems following the five issue arcs. At the same time, each of these arcs, which can stand alone, pay off for people who are more familiar with these characters. Celvinger and Wegener have practiced this storytelling skill and it really pays off. If you are a fan of Briggs Land, Postal or even TV's Riverdale or Twin Peaks, you should be picking up Grass Kings. It has that small town with an unseemly underbelly vibe down pat. This issue really is a satisfying conclusion to a epic reintroduction of one of DC's Golden Age characters. Carter Hall comes out if this as a fully realized person. If I have one disappointment in the series is that I was really hoping for a bigger opportunity to showcase Hawkgirl. I get that there was so much to do in the first 12 issues, but I really want more than the occasional help from a character that is almost integral to Hawkman himself. The expressive way that Juan uses Wing Chun does recall Bruce Lee. But while there are references to Bruce Lee, Juan is his own character and more flawed that Lee was in any of his movies. The biggest mystery I am left with in this issue is which spirit fixed Juan's window between issue 2 and 3.

The series clearly shows its roots in Bruce Lee movies, anime and other martial arts comics, but like the characters in the story, they have intertwined these elements and come up with something new. There are a number of books looking at similar issues and doing it with better grace. If you find ideas they present interesting, check out books like Magnus where they are carried out in a more subtle way.

The Mighty Captain Marvel #9

Sep 28, 2017

I can only hope that, Carol Danvers starts to act like herself once she gets back in space. I really want to see where Captain Marvel is going. I just hope the trip is worth this price of admission.

The Mighty Thor (2015) #17

Mar 17, 2017

If you haven't been reading Thor, I'd recommend not only picking up this issue, but grabbing the last two from the back issue shelves of your comic book shop. You'll appreciate the great work.

The Mummy #2

Dec 23, 2016

I love the way that Freire mixes the classical elements of London architecture with the Egyptian elements in the visions and the cultists. It is a clever interplay of styles, especially after his dark vision of the Egyptian afterlife as the book opens.

The Silencer #1

Jan 31, 2018

This is a gripping title launch and I'd be interested in seeing where this goes. I can't think of many comics that have been headlined by a woman killer who becomes determined to take the fight to her enemies, while trying to be a good mom.

The Wilds #1

Mar 1, 2018

You can tell you are reading a book by new talents because there is rawness to the story and the art that speaks of vibrancy. I am glad of that because much of this book feels like a retread of ideas we've seen before. I have a real hope that they can turn this from something generic to something special by focusing on Daisy and Heather against their ending world.

The XII is being distributed digitally by Alterna Comics. At this point, I don't see that they have put this on their schedule of comics on newsprint for physical distribution.+

They have succeeded in making me interested in checking out the trades to see more of the story. Although I am still open to the idea of a 21st Century version of Inspector Gadget…

Titans (2016) #21

Mar 14, 2018

In a lot of ways, this book relies on a great deal of pre-Countdown continuity, which can be a very high bar for a lot of newer readers. Especially ones who have been raised to always find an easy entry point for a comic. But these guys are worth it. Pick up a copy and start reading. Don't worry if you don't get every nuance right away. Once you get going, you will enjoy the ride.

Titans (2016) #28

Oct 24, 2018

Honestly, this title has been a pass for me, mainly because it had this down in the dumps feeling for so long. It also shed characters that I was interested in because I hadn't seen them for a long time, mainly because it didn't seem to know what to do with them. This issue was a needed relief from that. If Abnett and Henry can keep this up, it might make me add this book back to my pull list.

Torchwood (2017) #2

The problems with this book and series are the most common ones that plague adaptations of TV shows and movies. I really had hopes they would have overcome them. Sadly, they didn't.

Turok (2017) #1

Aug 2, 2017

I have to confess that I really haven't followed Turok since I was a kid, which was the Gold Key run, I think, and saw occasional books with him pop up. I know that everyone from Valiant to Dark Horse and even Dynamite have tried to revive and re-launch these characters. I don't know how successful this run will be, but this strange mix of technology and races may prove to be a version that can last.

Uncanny Avengers (2015) #28

Oct 13, 2017

If you've been curious about the Avengers (or at least this version), this issue is a good starting point. You get a good mix of character development and their histories, but doled out in manageable amounts and a little action to boot. If you aren't sure who the characters are and how they belong together, this issue will set you up pretty well for the future. If you are conversant with the current state of the various Avenger teams, this is a nice break from world-ending battles.

Valerian #15

Apr 5, 2017

This book is a fun adventure and one of the better more recent Valrian and Laureline adventures. If you seen the trailer for their movie this summer and want to get to know more about them this is as good a starting point as any. After all, the series spans roughly 40 years of publication.

Vampironica #2

May 30, 2018

The Archie horror books, I'm including Sabrina in with them, although I'm not sure if that is official, have all been really interesting takes on the classic monsters and Vampironica is shaping up to takes its place among them. I only hope that they can fix the plotting issues and make the exposition flow more naturally in the future.

Wild Storm: Michael Cray #4

Jan 10, 2018

We are only a third of the way through this 12-issue series, where Hill and Hama have managed to ramp the action each time. It doesn't take a genius to see where this series is going as Michael works his way up through the DC powerhouses. But where is leads Cray himself is another question entirely and I am all in for that ride.

Witchblade (2017) #3

Feb 7, 2018

If they can keep the plot's pacing moving in the upcoming issues, I would definitely say that this book should be on your pull list. As is stands right now, if you are curious about the title or have been an old fan of it, you should pick it up. It is still pretty easy to dive into the story.

Wonder Woman (2016) #30

Sep 13, 2017

I really want to see where Fontana plans on taking Wonder Woman from here. The art, however, has really been the downfall of this run. I would score the book higher, but honestly I am getting tired of DC and Marvel not paying attention to a fundamental element of their books.

Wonder Woman (2016) #34

Nov 8, 2017

The art issues that Wonder Woman has steadily suffered lately may be due to the rush of having to produce this book twice a month. I would rather deal with having to wait two extra weeks, if it means getting better art in this book.

Wonder Woman/Conan #3

Nov 15, 2017

This is a much more compelling version of Wonder Woman than is currently in her own book. And if you are not following the Conan books by Dark Horse, here is a great introduction to a classic character. Take advantage of this series to become acquainted to these great heroes.

Wonder Woman/Conan #5

Jan 17, 2018

This has been a great series so far, and with only one more chapter to go, we'll all have to wait a month to see how Simone and Lopresti are going to wind everything up. DC seems to have put a lot more thought into their team ups with other publishers and that has paid off in well-crafted stories that benefit the characters from both. Reader got to see another side of Diana and a side of Conan that is rarely brought to light in his stories. I hope this is something that they will continue to explore after this series ends.

X-Men: Gold (2017) #15

Nov 9, 2017

I have liked how both the Gold and Blue teams have each shaped a different niche and identity for themselves. In some ways, I would have hoped they would have more time as separate teams before they were thrown in a big story together. In some ways, this story threatens to undo some of the work that has been done over the past year and just jumble all the X-men together and say "Look, they are all still buddies. We can mix and match as we like." I was enjoying the different feel the teams have and hope they can get back to that once this Mojowar is done.

If you haven't been reading Valiant or X-O Manowar, this series is an excellent jumping on point. You get to learn what takes Aric from being a savage Visigoth to becoming the most dangerous man in the universe, with or without his armor. That is a trip worth taking.

X-O Manowar (2017) #11

Jan 24, 2018

I have always admired Valiant's ability to tell individual stories that work within their universe as stand alone stories, but still function in their larger designs as well. This is a more coherent universe than either DC or Marvel at this point. It really is a shame that more people are not taking a chance on these books.
