An exceptional start to a new series based on the great American Detective. It has superb storytelling from the writers and artists, with a compelling cast and an engaging narrative.It's worth noting that if you are a fan of Dick Tracy, you'll want to add an extra star to the rating. 'Dead In America' has started in exactly the same vain. It may cause offense. In fact, it should cause offense. It is offensive in the best possible way.

Hound is a five-star graphic novel. It is visual poetry, both beautiful and disturbing, and owes as much to Wilfred Owen as it does great European cartoonists such as Herge and Tignous. It is a violent and upsetting story of self discovery. A must read.

A solid start to a series that is steeped in 'Apes' history but not at the expense of the narrative. Superbly written and expertly drawn, BEWARE THE PLANET OF THE APES fits into the franchise like a hand into a well worn glove.

Some excellent artwork is let down by mediocre scripts in this new anthology. The unlikable characters make it difficult to get lost in the narratives but that shouldn't distract you from some of the form bending comic book work, especially in the second story.

Milligan is telling his story of a corrupt Indian city and fitting Hit-Girl into that. It works, and it works well but you do get the feeling this story could easily exist without Mindy's presence.

The new writer and artist bring some fun back to the Last Daughter of Krypton. There is still some way to go to get Supergirl back on top, but it's heading in the right direction.

Descendent is a clever introduction to a series and will appeal to fans of the X-Files and Paul Cornell's Saucer State series.

An all round entertaining, if some what grotesque, read. Cullen Bunn has slowly been increasing the scale of this little horror comic and the narrative is now world consuming. A prime example of a horror comic done well.

Orphan Age contains a mediocre future world with a collection of interesting characters. An interesting premise does not bare fruit but the art work makes this comic worth a look.

There are some good elements to this comic but the whole is disappointing. Great character work can't disguise the lack of threat required for this sci-fi horror story. A dip in the expected standard from this creative team.

Faithless is an erotic love story with strong ties to centuries old stories. The artwork is seductive and beautiful and will entrap you just as the central character is entrapped. A must read, but definitely Not Safe For Work.

Oberon is an enjoyable read and contains all of the theatrics that the reader is coming to expect from Parrott, Slavkovic and Pritchett. There are a few dips in the narrative but the Art pulls the reader along.

GLOW succeeds as a Teen Drama Sports comic but fails as a companion to the Netflix T.V.show. This comic if a fun read but lacks the depth and darkness you might be expecting. This will be enjoyed most by new readers to the GLOW concept.

A clever building of tension is set in a magnificent world created by the large art team. Get in on the ground floor for this series as it's going to get massive.

Stronghold dissects the Superhero and plays with conspiracy theories through an engaging narrative and outstanding art work. One of the best comics currently on the shelf, the creators are giving the reader a masterclass in comic book storytelling.

A spectacular start to a new space opera. The visuals create a magnificent new world while the narrative hooks the reader in.

Going back to the beginning is a bold move but Transformers #1 is perfectly pitched for the start of a new series. The opening is sedate and the pre-war Cybertron is a beautiful setting for a new introduction to everyone's favourite giant robots.

Bellaire and Mora are breathing life back in to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This is a superbly crafted comic that proves a modern retelling can be as good, if not better, than the original.

This is an entertaining and horrific comic. The characters are pushed to breaking point as Cullen Bunn demonstrates to the reader the dangers of modern media. Expertly laid out art work allows the narrative to flow evenly, picking up pace as the story unfolds.

A run of the mill 'origin of evil' story. Only the art work packs any kind of punch or expresses any emotion. A disappointing chapter in this modern day horror saga.

An over the top theatrical extravagance. Oberon is full of mystery, adventure. and references to fantasy from all mediums. This is an enjoyable comic heading for greatness.

Gunhawks has the visual style of a Spaghetti Western and the narrative of a classic revenge story. The only downside to this comic is that it is a one off and not a continuing story.

You get a feel very early of what exactly this comic is and what it is about, from that point onwards it doesn't disappoint. Superb art from all of the creative team and a narrative which is as fun as it is daft.

Crude issue 4 continues to push the emotional narrative forward through the use of excellent art work. All of the creators are working on the same page, literally and figuratively, as they produce a comic which flows effortlessly from panel to panel, page to page.

A fast-paced, socially aware, narrative and some intriguing Artwork make this a fascinating read. Not the best in the run but it sets the scene for what promises to be an emotional confrontation for the central character.

If you are of a certain age you will probably remember going to the cinema to see dark, muppet movie The Dark Crystal. It will no doubt have captivated you and drawn you into its slow paced, grim looking fantasy world. For years rumours have been abound about a sequel, including the proposition of a CGI follow up made on a tight budget. For good or ill, the sequel didnt materialise but now, thanks to Boom! Studios, the continuation of the story is available in comic book format.

A mix of franchises that manages to keep the reader engrossed however much you do, or do not, know about each separate element. The Apes, the Lanterns, the writer and the artist all shine in this first issue of a mini series.

Kurt Sutter and Caitlin Kittredge‘s Lucas Stand started on a high that it had difficulty reaching in the following issues. The central character hopped through time like a drug addled Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap and the narrative often fell too easily into time travelling cliches. However Lucas has arrived in the future and the comic has the opportunity to dig into his psyche in ways not possible previously.

Over recent years Roller Derby has become an extremely popular sport. Theres probable not a major city in America or the UK that doesnt have a Roller Derby team. Anyone who has been to see a live game will have noticed the intensity; not just of the game but also of the relationships between skaters, between teams and between supporters. The Derby world is one massive family with a full contact sport thrown into the middle.

Another month, another issue of MMPR: Pink from Boom! Studios. While the main title continues unabated, Pink has had a wobble or two. Falling from the height reached in issue one Pink has yet to climb back on top. And it doesnt look like the creators are in a rush to scale those heights again as they push out another disappointing issue. But what exactly is the problem?

IDW are branching out from their hit franchise titles and starting to include some brand new, slightly different, comic books. The Electric Sublime is one such title and it couldnt be that much further away from the likes of Aliens and Transformers. Its a wild ride into the realms of the Art world; an outlandish crime drama; and a mind blowing fantasy.

After a successful start to the series the narrative has taken a turn for the worse. The art continues to impress but it has become drowned in cliches and terrible plot twists.

Frank Cho is a popular cover artist who has also illustrated such titles as X-Men, Hulk and the Mighty Avengers. In his time, he has courted some controversy and also become known for his precise art style and buxom female characters. Skybourne is created, written and illustrated by Cho and is the first issue in a miniseries released this week from Boom! Studios.

Jim Thompson was a crime writer who was largely unrecognised during his lifetime. He wrote harrowing fiction that dealt with the darkest regions of Mans soul. Some of his work has been transposed into film, work such as The Grifters, and now IDW are reimaging his work for comic book readers.

In the age old tradition of Summer Specials, Boom! Studios have released several this month. First there was the Labyrinth anniversary special and now comes the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2016 Annual; a collection of stories written and draw by a selection of different creators. Although not directly linking with either the regular monthly or the Pink Ranger spin off, this comic still offers something worthwhile for any Power Rangers Fan

This comic still has those elements that I enjoyed from issue one and two, the Quantum Leap meets Hellblazer vibe, it is just let down by the central characterization. Clichs take over and the plot gets lost. At some points it may even make you think of the Doctor Who episode A Town Called Mercy but that probably isn't a good thing.

The Jim Hensons Labyrinth 30th Anniversary Special is made up of a selection of unconnected short stories that feature characters from the movie. None of them have any link to the movie and dont have any greater significance other than to entertain and delight. Theres no big meaning or large narrative on display, the comic is about revisiting and enjoying the laid back world of the Labyrinth.

Not up to the same standard as issue #1, but the artwork makes issue #2 worth picking up and gives hope for the rest of the series.

Another exciting issue tale of the Power Rangers which focuses on the very heart of their story: the concepts of good and evil. Higgins and company plate up a meal of temptation, which is all too easy to swallow.

The creators of Jackpot have produced an intriguing, exciting, genre traversing adventure that you simply can't put down.

An excellent ending to an excellent six issue run. The story is entertaining but is also a packed meta-fiction with a lot to say about modern myth telling.

The weakest issue so far in the run but still a comic worth reading. There is still many miles to go with this part of the Power Ranger franchise and theres no reason to give up on it yet.

A strong opening issue with spectacular art work that allows the reader to become engrossed in the narrative. Any familiarity in the plot is overshadowed by pacing writing.

A fitting end to a fantasy mystery story that has kept the readers guessing. One of the most engrossing comics of the year.

The second issue of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a triumphant success for the franchise and credit is due to the creators and Boom Studios!

At the end of the last issue, Dredd was accepted as a resident into Ang Avi, the de-evolved version of the Angela Davis block that the Judge is more familiar with. Once inside, it doesnt take long before he is climbing into the depths of the tower block to see what makes it tick. In scenes reminiscent of the 2005 movie The Decent, Dredd ventures into the pitch blackness and comes face to face with some horrifying creatures.

Worth a read for a feeling of completion but doesn't quite offer everything you hope for.

A bold, classic Sci-fi inspired start to IDWs new Mars Attacks. It sets the scene while introducing the readers to an amazing new character but a few layout issues impact upon the narrative at times.
