New Avengers (2013) #17

May 6, 2014

Topping the issue of is a beautiful cover by Leinil Francis Yu which serves to whet the appetite for his upcoming return to the Avengers book. The way the logo is incorporated into the cover design is absolutely fantastic and very much in keeping with the innovative design work that has been a staple of this books covers since its relaunch under Hickman and company. The issue is worth buying for the cover alone.

Original Sin #0

I have no idea how the art chores were broken up between Jim Cheung and Paco Medina, the whole book looks like it was produced by a single artist which is high praise for the art team indeed. I can't think of a recent Marvel book that had two separate artists that were more simpatico, if it allows Cheung to produce more of his iconic looking work then may I vote that he continue to work with Medina indefinitely? Beautiful, beautiful art and top notch story telling.

The United States of Murder Inc. #1

May 20, 2014

The digital edition of this comic is an absolute monster filled with the entire script for the first issue as well as a sketchbook section which should be a huge draw to any fans who are process nuts. It's a great little extra that makes this reader feel that I certainly got my moneys worth. This is a brilliant debut issue from a creative team that works as a well oiled machine, it should be on everyone's reading list whether you're a fan of the crime genre or just comics in general.

Ultimate FF #1

Another new face in this book is an iteration of former Shield agent Phil Coulson, again with the lack of space available to develop the character he simply fulfils the role of central command for the Future Foundation without really displaying much character or giving readers a great deal to invest in. Like everything else in this comic he has potential but there is a lot of work to be done to make this book a must read every month.
