And it all comes tumbling down... Hughie's nightmare begins as he finds out the last and terrible truth about Annie, with Butcher watching carefully from the sidelines. The Homelander calls a secret gathering of the clans- and marks the occasion with a particularly gruesome blood sacrifice.
This arc has been a very big payoff to a long running subplot in the book and conclusion doesn't disappoint at all. Ennis proves that while his strengths may be over the top humor or disgusting and shocking acts, he excels in character interactions. Whether it was Preacher, Hitman or now, The Boys, Ennis knows how to make his characters push each other's buttons and nails this issue with perfect dialogue. This is a special issue in this series. It's hard to read the second half of "The Boys" #47, because Ennis writes the scene with just as much emotion and pain and cruelty as the eventual confrontation between Hughie and Annie always implied. Their relationship has been a grounding part of the comic, something to draw the readers in and make them care. And, as expected (and dreaded), it all breaks apart, showing that "The Boys" is much more than superhero jokes and extreme violence.
