The Rainbow Hub - Logan Dalton Sep 30, 2015

Jem and the Holograms Annual #1 is part character study, part film homage, and part artist jam and succeeds as all of those by pairing art style and character and movie choice seamlessly. Each character's thoughts and fears about the world tie into their movie choice, and the art style evokes the atmosphere of the film (Rebekah Isaacs), a character's mixed feelings about their life situation (Arielle Jovellanos), a real world problem (Jen Bartel), or happy escapism (Agnes Garbowska). You will come out of this comic laughing at Kelly Thompson's clever film references, squeeing at baby Kimber and Stormer's affection, pumping your fists at the Holograms and the War Rig, and just enjoying the depth of characterization and variety of art styles in this excellent comic. While Sophie Campbell is missedafter her work on the first six issues from the title (she'll return on issue 11!), I am always glad for another issue of Jem and the Holograms and I can't wait to see what Kelly Thompson and Emma Vieceli have in-store for us next month! Read Full Review

So many art styles in one book. I love it. Everything was, of course, very Jem. Even though Aja was in a post-apocalyptic world, I didn't have to worry about anything being dark and grim. I am all for comic books going deep into character flaws and personalities. Even the dark parts of the mind are interesting to see in a book as cheerful and bright as Jem and the Holograms. I believe this book can connect well with its audience this way. Its okay to not be 100% all the time and things will come together in time. Read Full Review

Jem and The Holograms: Outrageous Annual #1 is a lot of fun and tackles the dream sequence trope with its tongue firmly in its cheek. While the nods to some classic cinematic favorites may be lost on younger readers, those of a certain age will definitely enjoy the riffs on Teen Wolf, Mad Max and Star Wars. Consistently amongst IDW Publishing's strongest offerings, Jem and The Holograms: Outrageous Annual #1 is a great example of what an all-ages comic books can be. Read Full Review

Bounding Into Comics - Jonathan Ngo Sep 29, 2015

Unless you're a big fan of Jem, you can pass on this book. It would be okay with a 4 or maybe $5 cover price but consider this : A usual Jem comic is $4 for 32 pages, this one is $8 for 48 pages. So the price per page is actually raised, and the quality of the stories, despite one that is pretty great, just can't justify it. Read Full Review
