Zinn is back in the world where they were once imprisoned, and painful secrets about their past are coming to the surface. Meanwhile, Maika investigates a mask possessed by the imprisoned Defiled-a mask that bears a striking resemblance to the long-sought Mask of the Shaman-Empress.
Monstress continues to be a thing of terrible beauty that is drawn straight out of another realm in ways that so many other comics are only attempting. The darkness is overwhelming, and the heroism of the central characters rests on a towering level as they confront so much on so many levels...many of them scarcely able to be articulated in any kind of coherent language. It's not a perfect comic by any means but it is a fun read. However, this is one of those comics that I would wait to get the TPB instead of reading individual issues, and that way I can get a mouthful of this story instead of nibbling away at a very interesting albeit complex story.
