Part 1 of "Revolutionary War"

Everything was spot on with the writing of this issue, even down to the slang used by the British heroes. This adds so much to the dialogue as I want to read this with them being themselves and not speaking like people in America do as there are different terms and slang used all over the world so it brings more realism to the story that I found exhilarating. Lanning and Cowsill have done a good job laying the groundwork for this new storyline which will hopefully lead to some of these characters popping up in X-Men or Avengers books or even their own ongoing sooner rather than later. An interesting prospect is having Wolverine head over the England to fight with (or against, round two?) Colonel Liger who was probably the most enjoyable character of the issue. We don't always have great luck with the weather this side of the pond but I hope in future they can acknowledge that it is occasionally sunny and perhaps lighten up the environments a little and feature a few less stereotypical characters into the British corner of the Marvel Universe. Revolutionary War: Alpha #1 sets a solid tone for the event going forward. While the story is somewhat straightforward and filled with a lot of information for new readers, these creators definitely do these UK heroes justice and this series has my attention. Read Full Review
Rich Elson's work is solid in this issue, conveying the many characters and story elements thrown out on the page as cleanly and efficiently as can be hoped for. The coloring, however, leaves a bit to be desired, and some panels have an odd shimmer to them that can overpower the pencils and inks. Read Full Review
Revolutionary War has all the foundations in place for an engaging and compelling storyline. My biggest concern is that the series will be handed off from one creative team to the next and anything promising with its debut will be lost when the next creative team takes a whack at it. Revolutionary War could turn out to be an interesting revival of a slew of characters that could have been relegated to a bygone era, or it could just turn out to be a short-lived reunion party for the old guard that doesn't mean they'll be back on regular duty anytime soon. Either way, it'll serve as an interesting window into what many of today's British creators probably grew up on. Read Full Review
I'm really rooting for this book. I want to like it. There are a lot of fun characters for Marvel to work with in this book, and I'm truly hoping it finds its groove soon. Many of these characters have been shelved for far too long, and it would be a shame to see them go back on the shelf because of the quality of this story. I'll try it again next month, but if things don't change, I can't see any of these characters benefitting from this story. Read Full Review
It feels somewhat disappointing for a world so filled with magic and wonder to return devoid of either. "Revolutionary War Alpha" is a case of having all the pieces necessary for a good comic, strong creators, fun characters, and a unique setting, but failing to put them together in a satisfying way. Luckily, with each of the various one-shots being handled by a different creative team, there's still plenty of opportunity for this ship to be righted. Read Full Review
I admire the mission statement of this comic; but it needs to be more dedicated to the cause and approachable to the target audience. There is a text page at the end of the issue that declares the purpose of this issue to be a wider range of exposure to readers heretofore unfamiliar with Marvel UK characters, but "Revolutionary War: Alpha" #1 could use a little more pizzazz to keep the readers interested and returning. Perhaps "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" type text pieces would be of benefit. At that point, readers could quickly reference the characters in the issue rather than wondering who Tion Liger is, what his skills are and why they should care. Read Full Review
