Don't you hate it when you get a comic and you zip right through it? That won't be the case here. Scott Snyder decided he had so much story to tell, half of the issue is in prose. Detailing pages from an old miner's journal, we get a vivid description of past events tied to the current timeline and get to actually use our imagination in visualizing the creepy events going on. There is some great art by Matias Bergara with color by Dave McCaig. This issue might not pick up directly from the previous but it's an incredibly ambitious installment and you more than get your money's worth in terms of story. Read Full Review

I love horror and American Vampire has delivered on that. Snyder really brings more mystery to the "Gray Trader" who has been laying in wait over the many years. Creating a story around just two men during the "Gold Rush" was an interesting choice and it really delivers. Read Full Review

American Vampire: Second Cycle #5 is an enjoyable side story that is really creepy and thrilling to read. I'm not exactly sure how this will ultimately play into the main story and the prose part of the book may not be for everyone, but I can definitely say confidently that this was a fine issue for the series. It could be that with future issues I'll come to understand and appreciate this particular side story, but for right now it lacked a crisp and satisfying conclusion. It had an intriguing buildup that didn't pay off in any way that I could see and by the end I was weary of reading the rather verbose journal entries. I'll be excited to get back to the main narrative next issue, so for right now I'll file this issue away to be revisited some time in the future. I'm sure Snyder has a plan, even if I cannot yet see it, and I look forward to uncovering it as the series progresses. Read Full Review
