The "Warworld Saga," has been a rollercoaster, with more valleys than peaks, but Action Comics #1040, which almost feels like a one-off issue is a remarkable homage to John Carter of Mars. Indeed much of the "Warworld Saga" owes something to John Carter, but this issue in particular evokes the nostalgia while also doubling down on those aspects that are common to both the Warlord of Mars and the Man of Steel. We get a frustrated Superman who reacts, not out of character, but accordingly and there's an honesty in it that Action Comics has been lacking for some time. As for the Martian Manhunter backup story, while Superman's story is heavy, this issue gives us a delightful moment of J'onn and his tabby cat that frankly I didn't know I needed, but it's both a truly wonderful "aww!" moment and also absolutely perfect to the character and the story. Action Comics continues to be a great book in both its main story and backup and that goes for the art as well. Yeah, I think that the art of this issue isn't quite as good as we got previously in our main story, but the Martian Manhunter backup looks so great that the full page of J'onn J'onzz in the story will remind you why he's our favorite Martian. Action Comics #1040 continues the Warworld Saga as Mongul keeps pushing Superman to his limits. The comic continues to show this clash between the two characters on both a physical and ideological level that drives the entire story. The comic's dialogue and story is well-written while the art and colors makes this comic a great read. Read Full Review

Action Comics #1040 continues to show Superman's greatest power may be the ability to inspire hope. His "goodness" is on full display here, while he also holds his own depowered and fighting giant alien monsters. There was a fair amount of exposition in this issue. We saw a lot and get told a lot. But it all just enriched the story. It deepens the whole saga, the whole world.  This whole issue moved things forward a bit but made the whole story more complex.  Read Full Review

Another perfect issue. And we can already see where the story is going to. Can't wait to see the Revolution in Warworld.

Warworld's still dope.

The narrative PKJ has constructed is absolutely fascinating. Layered and complex, the idea of pitting Superman against indoctrination & oppression is brilliant - Superman vs 1984.

This issue has a great moment where we realize that whatever he does, Mongul has already lost against Superman: Killing Him would make him a martyr, while leaving him alive merely allows the rebellion fires to continue growing. Superman is also in a stalemate, where he can defeat Mongul at the cost of annihilating Warworld and all of the warzoons on it vs his current plan of inspiring the warzoons to break Mongul's hold over them.

Now that we know the Necropolis is inside Warworld, does the Orchard of the Dead that allows resurrection have some connection to Element X of the New Gods? And we still don't know who the unknown scavenger from Action #1030 is.

Overall, this continues to be a wonderfully put together book and probably the best thing coming out of DC as of this moment. more

I gave it a 9 because the main story is a 10 but the backup story is like a 6.5 or 7. Just give us more filler with Superman, Mongul, and Midnighter.

a solid issue with great art and this shows why Superman is the greatest superhero of all time.

I really enjoy the main story here. I think it captures Superman's character very well. It's all tonally consistent. The story is dark, but Superman isn't Zack Snydering his way across the page. It's just really well done, and I wish I had a more interesting way to say that. The backup is... out of place. It doesn't hit anywhere close to the height of the main story. It's a very basic feeling Martian Manhunter story. Yet another point towards DC dropping backups instead of charging a dollar more for their comics.

Really not feeling it in any way. I’m just trying to get through Warworld. It’s such a slog.
