It's hard to conclude a story that doesn't give itself a clean cut conclusion. Mirroring one of the greats, we're left with a familiar shot of one character doing what they do best, looking out to an uncertain future. We don't know what the fate of our Batman was. All in all, the story was alright.  Before reviewing the third issue I read through the entire series to refresh my memory.  The tone remained consistent for the most part, even if it started to fall off for me midway through the second issue.  I felt like the initial controversy from the first issue caused the writer to really tone down the graphic “Black Label vibes” that I had been looking forward to with this imprint.  I felt like certain aspects of the story needed more explanation but had a decent time nonetheless.  I did not like the lettering with Constantine's narration, it grew old fast.  Lastly, to reiterate, the art is almost perfect.   Read Full Review

Immediately likeable dynamic between Constantine and Swamp Thing, loved the cemetery action sequences. Harley Quinn is unbelievable, she's a different person without Joker, no wonder she buried Batman alive. After two books the narration get a real hold of the wit and flair for the dramatic.

Enchantress/Bruce himself is the reason for the death of his parents, open to interpretations - quite a notable aspect of this comic. Boston and Constantine together with the help of Zatanna make Enchantress' deal go away, finally making it easier for the Dark Knight to accept his final fate. The whole take on the Batman was not tried before, it's laudable even though it sacrifices some of the Batman's characteristics for the plot. A satisfying conclusion, or is it a beginning to something else entirely?! Azzarello leaves that part out to the readers. more

The artwork is brilliant! Putting aside the faux “controversies” that get people all unnecessary mad, this issue close the story, for now, very nicely. Would have loved to see more Zatanna and Swamp Thing though. And the parts felt a little rushed.

This book requires some thought and effort on the part of the reader, which I appreciate. The story goes places you don’t necessarily expect. While those places may not be immediately satisfying as a punch out between Batman and the Joker, this issue will linger in your mind and have you digging into previous issues and previous graphic novels. Bermejo’s art is always brilliant. There’s also a “surprise” link to the team’s previous work. Highly recommended.

Again, I thought the art was great and I loved the supernatural and dark elements. I did think it was pretty obvious that Azzarello tried to make this a little too dark because it was the first book of Black Label, but that didn’t affect the overall story too much. The narration makes this comic much more harder to follow than it had to be, and I think I will like Damned better after a reread or two

I expected to hate this going in after really disliking issue two so many months ago. But I was actually into it. With most of the more "edgy" components that plagued issue two missing, we get something more like issue one. And it's well drawn and mostly well written. I just wish Constantine was more like he was in Azzarello's Hellblazer. There are hints of it there, but he doesn't come close. I also wish the middle chapter was better, because then I'd probably be picking up the trade. (And I'd only go for the uncensored version, of course.)

It’s sad, that this story isnt appreciated more just because of the penis outrage last year. We finally get the conclusion of the story& it stays interesting. I think the way Martha’s & Thomas relationship is portrayed in this series is quite interesting& fresh. It would be interesting to see how an unhappy marriage affected Bruce. It’s also hinted, that Enchantress is responsible for their deaths, but nothing is 100% sure in this Comic. I think there are many possible interpretations, which makes it more interesting. I also liked the horror elements. The outcome of Jokers murder was also kind of cool& surprising, even so I want to slap Bruce for what he did in the end.
Since fear is a big theme in this issue I find it sad, that Azarello didn’t include Scarecrow in it, but well....
The end teases another comic, but the way it went, I’m not sure, if Azarello will write for DC anytime soon. I hope he will, since Batman Damned was a cool story. It’s only sad, that Black Label pretty much gets censored now. I think Harley might would have gone farer in issue 2 than what we saw. Or I’m wondering, if issue 3 also would have been more brutal. Therefore Black Label is quite pointless, since all we get now are cursing words& those I really don’t need, but deeper stories, more violence, no censorship of bodies could make some interesting comics. It however seems adults can’t deal with adult comics, what is quite disappointing.

The art is also amazing& hope we get to see more of it in other comics.

Pretty much exactly what I wanted from this series, I now have an interest in checking out Joker.

this series was overhyped tbh, and while re-reading it, it's not that bad it still leaves more to be desired.

Full disclosure, I cheated with this review. I was totally lost after reading this issue. I went back and read it again and was still fuzzy. At that point, I said f*ck it and watched Comics Explains rundown of the issue. 


I typically never watch other content creators opinions prior to sharing mine for fear that their opinions may influence my own and diminish the credibility of my review. 

Considering I got clarity from Rob It's only fair that I link his video.

Batman Damned has been the most uneven series I've reviewed since I got back into comics in 2015 with possibly the exception of Bebop & Rocksteady hit the road from IDW. 

The first Book was confusing and weird, introducing us to Batman's dick. The second book was excellent and had one of my favorite cliffhangers of the year to date. This issue isn't bad it's just disjointed. Batman Damned is the equivalent of reading Shakespeare in 2019. The story is great but you have to work for it. 

The most consistent aspect of the series is the artwork from Lee Bermejo. This is the most beautiful book you will pick up and in my humble opinion is worth the cover price alone.

My favorite aspect of the Book is the rendition of the Batsuit. The detail in the armor is great. It looks worn and I love that you can make out the armor scales in the suit. The damage that is affecting Bruce becomes more pronounce the longer that you look at the pages. The more you look the more you see and it's amazing. 

On the flip side, Brian Azzarello script is possibly the most confusing story you'll ever read. The plot is hazy and to be fair it's an intentional narrative device, but it hurts the flow of the story and diminishes the impact of the project and its conclusion.

Even with my mixed reaction to the series, Batman Damned does justify its existence. We also have no idea how much of the story was altered after "Penisgate". I'm not sure who to blame for the series inconsistencies, Brian or DC?

I'd love to get alternate takes on the ending since apparently, I'm an idiot. I'm currently ruminating on Wacky Raceland and I'm debating on making Batman: Damned my next series to deep dive into, if only for my sanity. more

I only read issue 3, never a good thing for a miniseries (always start at issue 1), so that may have impacted my score.

It read like a tale of two books -- the front half being a supernatural "Justice League Dark" of sorts, minus the JLD characters sitting around and chatting for 90% of the pages like they do in the regular book. There was actual action and movement (I award an entire point for getting JLD right). Like the reliving of Batman's origin story (again), this time where Constantine tells Bruce to stop living in the past...fulfilling the dreams of so many comic fans who just don't want to see yet another Crime Alley scene. I wept in joy.

The back half felt more like a "Greatest Hits" recap, tying the title in with Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's "The Killing Joke". If you have to hitch your book to another, you could certainly find much worse than arguably one of the best Batman books of all time.

Art is good. Very distinctive. Layouts aren't anything special, but they don't need to be. The colors especially set the tone. Lots of love went into drawing this book. more

Damn. The debut of DC Black Label courtesy of Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo. Gotta say, it was both underwhelming and impressive at the same time. In this elseworld tale, Batman has fallen unconscious and wounded, to wake up to the death of the Joker. Who did it? With the help of one John Constantine, Batman sets off to piece together perhaps his most startling case yet.

Overall, a solid book. I can't say that I would recommend it, but its certainly is not a bad book. To start, the art. Its gorgeous. DC is so lucky to have an artist like Lee Bermejo, his art is so luscious, realistic and life-like. His style is similar to Alex Ross but with more texture. You can buy this book solely based on his art, thats how damn awe-dropping it is to look at. Colors, transitions and panel layout all the more make this series a joy to read.

The covers as well, they are fire. I don't really talk much about covers, but both the Bermejo Covers and the Lee variants are so crisp, these books will cost fortunes.

Anyways, the story, while interesting, had lackluster execution. Underwhelming cause Azzarello is considered a good writer, but he drives to deep into the dark and edgy aspect of DC Black Label. It certainly excels at the horror aspect thanks to Bermejo's art skills, but the story doesn't feel connected very well, and what is set up is sort of left open ended (might be intentional).

Bermejo attempts to go King style and use alot of poetic or elusive writing and dialogue to amplify the mystery and darkness of this book, but it muddles down into confusion and edginess. Certain things in this book don't make sense either due to a lack of connection to the story or poor execution in the writing.

And then Harley Quinn. When I said they really went deep into this dark and edgy concept, I mean't it. In the first issue, this aspect worked, and help the story get off to a strong start after the 1st issue, Batwang aside. Then in the latter 2, it just seemed forced in so it could debut under DCBL.

Bermejo does play around with quite a few toys, such as magic, hint why Constantine is here, and Bruce's childhood. And while it was cool to see Bermejo use these, it didn't affect the main story to find out who killed Joker, or at least in the way I expected it to. Although, this did peer back into how his childhood affected Bruce as Batman decades later, which was great.

There was also this really cool kind of ghost that wander around in Bruce childhood memories into his journey to find who killed Joker, and Azzarello did some really cool things with her. But her existance just makes the story that much more confusing on this whole Joker investigation.

Overall, this book was solid. The first issue was fire, but it abruptly stumbled through the rest of this series. Still, Bermejo is one hell of a artist.

Art aside, the biggest compliment I can give to this comics is: at least no one tried to rape anybody like in the previous, awful beyond belief issue. It's still a pretty bad comic, don't get me wrong, but hey, it doesn't insult the reader, so for Azzarello is a rare thing these days. Maybe if he was less busy ruining beloved characters by letting them either be banged by Batman (Batgirl, from The Killing Joke abomination of an animated movie) or trying to bang him (Harley Quinn, last issue of this trainwreck dumpster fire), he could caft some decent stories. That ain't it yet, though. It's just a baby step in between edgelord hack writing and actually decent screenplays. Maybe he'll get to the latter in the future.

The art is great, but it's a shame it was wasted in this series. Same happened to Heroes in Crisis - beautifully illustrated, but just irredeemably awful underneath.

Avoid it if you can, Damned #3 is bad. It's not terrible like #2 and partially #1, but it's bad nonetheless. Glad this shit is finally over. more

In comparison, super brutal, yet mature, stories like Casino or Once Upon a Time in America, feature reasons for its violence to exist. It's not just for shock - it serves the story and its characters. No one tries to rape anybody just because it's a "cool" shock moment.

I think the DCEU was doomed from the start because Warner Bros was trying to do what Marvel did without understanding that you need proper build up, and then they tried to be """"adult"""" with it because of the Nolan trilogy, while not realizing that, 1. The grounded tone of the Nolan films doesn't work for most superheroes outside of Batman and 2. Zack Snyder is a much bigger hack than Nolan.

It’s also good to see Harley more in character than the hypocritical Harley we are constantly shoved in our faces. As for Snyder I like him as well. I don’t see DCEU as failed, since most of the movies made more money than Marvels first MCU movies& Apart from SS they were all good. Nolan movies made many villain

We have strayed too far from adult or mature themes in storytelling because of the internet age. Zack Snyder is an incompetent storyteller. I think the only reason Watchmen kind of worked was because the source material was so strong. But the DCEU movies had to do their own thing and completely fucked it up. The MCU, like it or not, is well received for more than just it's comedic/happy tone. There's a reason the darker movies in that franchise, such as Infinity War and Endgame, still managed to draw crowds. People connect with the MCU characters and their journeys.

@Darkseid24- The Tim Burton movies rule! I agree about Snyder. Although I don't find his movies deep, he is a very good visual director who always has solid takes on familiar characters. Plus, he directed a personal favorite of mine, 300. I also love the Nolan movies, though not as much for the villains. More for the score, cinematography, color palette, etc. Plus they are very enjoyable for me personally outside of the technical perspective.

@Br‘er Agreed. @ YourGreenMuse Snyders movies were great, Problem rather were the fans, who didn’t get the concept of Elseworlds. They didn’t get, why Batman can kill in the DCEU& fans also just wanted a MCU copy, but I think DCEU can be different. Most of MCU movies are typical popcorn movies, but Snyders movies had many cool comic references& were deeper than MCU movies. They even changed Thanos motivations to the point were it was just dumb. I take Snyder movies over Marvel movies any time.

Snyder's movies were not great. I didn't dislike them because Batman killed. I disliked them for their bad writing. You know who really wanted an MCU? Warner Bros. Snyder's films were not deep. The only way someone could come to that conclusion is if they just aren't paying attention. Thanos' motivations in the comics are fairly straight forward, which wouldn't help with your "deepness" argument. His motivation is to woo Lady Death. He's literally just a nice guy for Death.

In the film, he sees himself as a messiah-like figure. Doing the things necessary to save everyone, no matter the cost. That's deeper than getting in a skeleton's robes. Snyder's movies are a drag and require a lot of toleration. 300 looks pretty, sure. But as a movie, it's not great. Snyder's visuals, while sometimes washed out, are not my problem with him. It's how baffling his decisions are.

I appreciate 300 for it's wonderful camera-work, landscapes, editing, performances, cinematography and score. The story may not be the most complex, but the truth is, it doesn't need to be. Also, I couldn't give a shit about historical accuracies. I agree that sometimes his decisions piss me off, but a lot of times I enjoy them. Although, I don't know what the hell he was thinking with Sucker Punch.

You do bring up a lot of valid points however. I will say that I enjoy his films more than I think they are technical masterpieces or whatever. I suppose you could call them guilty pleasures for me. Anyways, I totally see where you're coming from here, and I understand why so many people hate Snyder.
