Spider-Island is here! The idea of New York City gaining spider-powers felt crazy but the execution by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos pays off. After months of tiny bits of set up, the action begins. Spider-Man will be in over his head when he discovers he's powers are no longer as unique as he thought. Slott brings in many guest stars and cameos but they don't feel forced. Slott sets up the action and Ramos knocks it out of the park. Ramos' art delivers what you would want and expect in a Spider-Man 'event.' This issue was so fun to read. We have big action, great art and lots of opportunities for craziness and excitement in the first part of this story. Back in full swing on issue #667 is Humberto Ramos, and he’s having just as much fun as Slott. Nobody captures the visual fun and excitement of a comic book like Ramos does. His pencils take a modern style and merge it with a time when comics popped off the panel, bigger than life. There’s a real sense of being a comic book to what Ramos does and it’s exciting to watch unfold. Every panel is a bold statement with something happening, even if it’s not action. When the action does drop in, Ramos takes it all to another level. The marriage between his art and Slott’s words is the perfect storytelling device. I miss when comics were this much fun and I’m really intrigued to see where Spider Island goes next. Read Full Review

At this stage of the comic, Parker is about to learn that his current problems are about to become a whole lot more complicated (don't they always) and during the ensuing discord, while old brush top Jonah Jameson rants on (some things never change), Peter Parker learns that perhaps being Spider-Man is not going to help him this time. Ramos seizes the opportunity to depict a plethora of Spider-People in a plethora of Spidey outfits. Almost every costume gets some panel time from the pencil of Ramos, including the "Iron Spider" get-up and the Scarlet Spider hoodie. I dont like Humberto Ramos work. I wont go in details since I have never liked his work. Theres too much happening at once and the characters proportions are exaggerated and distorted. However, many people like his work and I wont fight against that. While many of the pages interior art was tough to follow in action scenes, the quiet ones were much better laid out. The first chapter of Spider-Island isn't bad or unenjoyable by any means, it's just that the styles of Slott and Ramos never quite get in sync to deliver a story that's on par with the chapter that led up to it. Amazing Spider-Man #667 told a well-paced story that did an effective job being new reader friendly while inserting plot developments for long term readers. Dan Slott hit all the right character notes in this issue by presenting a challenge for Peter Parker to face that will force him to go about overcoming in a different manner he is used to. With a city filled with people with his powers itll be fun to see how Peter goes about implementing his new training and how his supporting cast will interact with him as Spider-Island moves forward.
