This book is an impressive piece of comic book craftmanship. The creative teams involved are all doing some of their best work and the sheer number of creators and chapters linked together is impressive. Tom Brevoort (with special thanks to Jordan D. White) should be commended for pulling this off so well. That said, it does suffer when you realize many of these chapters are linked into the narrative simply to act as a preview for what is to come. Some people won't like these comics because they don't focus for long on any one hero/group but I think they are an excellent way of giving people a quick taste of what many of the heroes of the Marvel Universe are like, a feel for the art style and the writing they can expect when they buy their own story arcs. It's not a bad story itself so even if you just want a bit of a murder mystery it's still a bit of fun. If you've been following the Marvel 80th stories I'd say grab this one to continue your collection, if you want a heads up as to what might be set to occur in 2020.. again, probably good to grab this. In addition to Empyre, Incoming #1 also plugs future storylines like Outlawed (seemingly a take on Civil War but with the MUs youngsters), Iron Man 2020, Atlantis Attacks (a crossover between Namor and the Agents of Atlas), Ewings Guardians of the Galaxy relaunch, and X-Men/Fantastic Four. If you are wondering where most of the Marvel books are heading in 2020, then this may be worth a look. However, if you are looking to dive into the murder mystery that C.B. Overall, I have gotten through the big hype that is Incoming #1, and it sucked to close it feeling like it wasn't enough for me to pick up the second. I enjoyed the heroes who played a part in the first act, the artists involved, though that was about it really. Pretty good set up.

This was mostly pretty good.

Might be just me, but I really loved to see pretty much all current major players in the Marvel Universe in the same story. I'm really excited about the stuff coming out in 2020.

There's way too much here to go over everything. But this issue is mostly getting everyone up to speed and setting up what's coming so that readers can easily jump into all the stories Marvel is publishing. There's not much new here, though, besides what will become Outlawed and Empyre. And regarding both of those, we already knew what they were. I'm really interested in what the Masked Raider will be up to next. I thought that he'd have a bigger role here, but like the big anthologies earlier this year, he's brief. I'm glad Al Ewing is getting to finally do with Empyre what he set up in... I think it was the first arc of his New Avengers in 2015, but that's purely because I like Al Ewing as a writer, and not necessarily because I'm interested in what's happening regarding that. And Outlawed has potential as a status quo. As for all the other teases... I was already excited for those and I didn't need that excitement reaffirmed. But then again, I guess that was the point of this one-shot. I will say that the way everything flowed together was mostly cohesive. The Marvel universe felt connective and large, like it should be. And you wouldn't think that'd be as commendable as it is but I think DC's recent attempts at something similar show that it's not as easy as it seems. I came away from this with excitement for Marvel 2020, so I think it did its job. more

Good craftsmanship which catches none readers up to date with everything going on in Marvel. Since I am current it read as a recap for me. So wait...I really gotta wait until April for Empyre Saga?????

Partly a continuation of Marvel Comics #1000-1001, partly a trailer reel, this wide-ranging story pulls the "chain storytelling" trick from Amazing Spider-Man: Full Circle across a much wider stage. I enjoyed this more than I expected to, thanks to solid storytelling and good character work in most of the scenes.

It helps that as a Marvel Unlimited reader, I can soak up all this foreshadowing and know that it'll all make its way to me -- eventually -- without requiring any additional financial outlay.

(And it also helps that I've read plenty of bronze-age Avengers. I know that "killer trees did it" is not nearly as random as it sounds when your story involves Kree history.)

I've knocked a point off my rating for the obscene pricing. I'm satisfied with this as a surprise gem on MU with a marginal cost of $0. I would NOT be satisfied if I was slapping down the price of a full month of MU access just to get 84 pages of coming attractions. more

I'm on the fence on this one. Good setup overall and keeps flowing but I already know 90% of this stuff and I spent money already to read it so the 10% new material isn't worth $10. As someone mentioned this should have been the Marvel Comics 1001 and it would have been much better then but the price is an issue for me as it keeps me from picking up other books. This should have been proportionally priced below $5 to get people to pick it up but Marvel has to squeeze us for every dime. We'll see where this goes but as of now I'll check out the Road to Empyre and decide then.

This should have been marvel comics #1001 instead of what they actually released. It was much more well paced and flowed a lot better than that book and feels more like a follow up of #1000

This should have been free but here we are paying 10 dollars for Incoming 1. It basically just catches us up what’s happened in the Marvel Universe this year and what’s going to come next year, yet it’s all so boring. Ewing and his squad of writers failed to get me hooked with this detective story. The revelation that the Skrulls and Kree were the culprits was underwhelming, and although I think Hulkling is an interesting character with a ton of potential, that last page some how got me a little less excited for Empyre. I mean seriously, another Marvel event with the Kree and Skrulls? It’s getting to be an old trope. I still think Empyre can be a good event, as War of the Realms and Absolute Carnage were fantastic events, but so far it does not look promising more

Incoming aims to solve a murder mystery while showcasing the Marvel Universe going into 2020. Let's see how it goes.

The Good:
It was nice seeing how the entire Marvel Universe is going right now.

The Bad:
The detective story fell flat.

It is boring at certain points which isn't helped by the length of the issue.

Conclusion:
If you want a catch up on the Marvel Universe, this works well. However, it is just set-up and falls flat in it's main selling point.

Um... First of all, this is SUPER big. And very badly connected. I mean, it started okay, was an interesting beginning for a detective story. But then comic forgets about it on maybe 60 pages and almost in the end it suddenly remembers... Also I read it only for the Hulk, so I really didn't get how Hulkling came from a casual Wiccan's loverboy to a freaking Kree/Skrull emperor in an actual hour or something... It seems, all this one-shot had was only to lead to the Empyre event...

And yeah, some of the parts were good, many of these artists were cool and some of them are one of my favourites. And because of the type of this book, it's almost impossible to really rate the writing of so many people. This may also be soooo boring at parts... Yet it's still okay if you want to see many different characters under one cover and if you are a die hard fan, who read all comic series of that time - then it might be a good thing to read. However, I really doubt such people do even exist... more

I suppose if you are a fan of the current direction of Marvel comics, you will probably like this. It will do very little to win anyone else over. Also does anyone else realize the cliffhanger is just "Invasion!" which is a little suspicious since this one is called "Incoming!"?

But these type of initiative starting one-shot advertisements should be FCBD giveaways or 1$ promotional issues at most... not 10$ overpriced/sized collectors bait.

So this is a way to get a quick primer on what is happening in most of the titles coming out from Marvel right now by reading a single comic. The idea seems to be to bring in a creative team from each title for about 4 pages then pass it off to the next creative team. A few liberties are taken, but that's the gist of it. Each segment is connected by an overarching mystery and it actually works decently well for the most part. Some of the creative teams even manage to squeeze in some witty dialogue and personality among all of the exposition. The book starts off transitioning between characters seamlessly but eventually stumbles in the middle as the mystery plot is set aside for much looser transitions that hinge on mentioning an upcoming character by name or hinge on the use of a news broadcast as a transition between locations. The mystery plot thread is eventually picked up again and resolved, though not in a particularly satisfying manner. I should also say that the big status quo that is set up for the end doesn't interest me all that much as someone whose never latched onto the space themed books that Marvel puts out.

As an expensive preview comic that had to coordinate a ludicrous number of creative teams, this is actually rather successful. Do I recommend buying it for entertainment or for literary value? No. I find myself already forgetting what I just read because the plot that does exist is flimsy and uninteresting, plus I've never been a fan of stories that juggle an overwhelming number of characters.

Incoming is successful at what it set out to do, but what it does is not worth the time and money expected from the reader. I agree with other users who suggest that this would be better suited as a Free Comic Book Day giveaway. more

I was expecting a murder mystery set in the Marvel Universe. What I got was a recap of the Marvel Universe with a tease for what’s to come in the Marvel Universe.

A series of short stories loosely connected with a murder mystery framing device which itself only exists to pimp Empyre. The other stories all exist solely to hype upcoming storylines of various current and upcoming titles. This would have been great as a free comic giveaway, but to charge $10 for a glorified preview comic is shady even by Big Two standards.

Nothing of consequence here. Save your money
