Darth Vader does a damn fine job with its story and the Sho-Torun arc as a whole will really work well as a standalone read while figuring into the bigger picture. Kieron Gillen is just nailing it issue after issue. This installment also features more lavish and striking artwork from Salvador Larroca and I just can't get enough of what he does here. The ore baron's underworld is well captured and I love the costume design and some of the details he brings into it – before shifting to pure Imperial designs toward the end. In particular, I really loved his presentation of Queen Trios throughout and very much so during her time with Vader at the end here with the wrap up. DARTH VADER #19 is emblematic of everything this book does right and wrong. On the one hand, you have the comedic elements that Triple Zero and Beetee bring to the table, the strong characterization of Queen Trios, and Darth Vader's insidious actions. On the other, there's a rushed conclusion, weak villains, and ultimately bland artwork. There's a lot of good here, though, and the last few pages tease that there are great things on the horizon for this series. As such, issue #19 in particular and the Shu-Torun War as a whole have proven excellent examinations of the character of Vader, demonstrating his dogmatic "devotion to that ancient religion," his masterful manipulation of allies and adversaries alike, and the very genuine threat he posed to Luke throughout the Saga through his successful corruption of "inexperienced youth not expecting power." As for Vader, his victory may be short-lived as he learns that Aphra has been found not by his mercenary bounty hunters but by Inspector Thanoth who has a few questions for the Dark Lord of the Sith. It appears Vader's secret plan to finance his own clandestine missions for the Empire may be about to bite him in the ass. Worth a look. Read Full Review
This series is really solid up to this point, so I'll let go of the book's need for Dr aphra to be a part of it, even though she is currently indisposed by a rebel prison that only serves to confound me. How can a scrappy, unorganized, underfunded, understaffed and clandestine organization of rebels have enough resources to build a supermax space prison. But this isn't that book. This is a really solid story, with great art, and only a couple moments that really felt odd or clunky to me. The emotional payoff with Queen Trios was really great, and her last panels were actually really humorous and endearing. Things don't end well for Vader, seeing so much of his deception being discovered by Inspector Thanoth. I'm intrigued to see where this more
This is a fairly solid finale to a fairly solid arc. The development of Trios reaches its climax and you can tell that she has tried to craft herself in Vader's image. The betrayal that comes at Vader's expense doesn't have the significance that it should have because the characters involved don't have enough development.
