Perfect companion piece to Hickman's Ultimates. Finally, we can take The Ultimates serious again. Hawkeye can carry his own story for sure, especially with a great cast around him. It has one of the best opening stories currently at Marvel, and that's all thanks to the fabulous writing of Jonathan Hickman. The art is solid and just as good as the writing, but the one problem I had with the issue was a small problem with the story. But overall, I loved this book, and I highly recommend it. This is very much a setup issue, with a big inciting incident and call to action. Promising as the mission statement feels now, this chapter on its own does feel a bit slight. Packed as it is with background on the People and a new threat for mutants from the SEAR, it's mostly potential energy building up for issue #2. Hickman offers a compelling new threat and a pretty badass platform from which Clint Barton (I find myself just wanting to use his real name and not his 007 handle) can strike out on his own. Sandoval's art feels reminiscent of Stuart Immonen's mainstream Marvel work of late, and you know that's not a bad thing. The potential's all here for a solid spy romp with real-world maturity. I really do like this character, but I will have to really hold judgment until the next three issues are released. I hope that a guy who makes for a great supporting character in The Ultimates doesn't turn out to be a two-dimensional character in the long run. Read Full Review

I don't think Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye #1 is as successful of a start as Hickman's other book, Ultimates #1. The book's got a great setup, there's no doubt about that. But the delivery in this first issue leaves something to be desired. Hopefully Hickman fills that void with future installments. Read Full Review

Comic Book Resources - Chad Nevett Aug 31, 2011

Overall, "Ultimate Hawkeye" #1 provides a good introduction to the problem in the S.E.A.R. and why Hawkeye is there. The problem is, it doesn't make a convincing argument for why this story deserves its own series and why Hawkeye is so essential to it. Why are we focusing on this particular event instead of the other two introduced in "The Ultimates" #1 and why is Hawkeye the agent for the job? Those are questions that this series needs to answer quickly in order to avoid becoming the unessential expansion of a story people can read the "good parts" of in another comic. Read Full Review

If you were intrigued by Hickman's start to The Ultimates, and you're ready to settle in with the larger story he's telling, then you'll find this an intriguing chapter. But you're not going to find it a knock-off-your-socks standalone. Read Full Review

Comics Bulletin - Shawn Hill Sep 9, 2011

This is an underwhelming disappointment. One comes to a Hawkeye comic hoping for a barrage of on-target attacks, masterful action scenes starring the hero who never misses (and who has a reason to always be on point and ready to aim and fire, as we saw his family killed before his eyes when he was betrayed by a colleague a few years back). I don't think one is looking instead for a murky reading on the state of East/West politics, a generic cameo from Nick Fury or a retread plot from old mutant books. Read Full Review

Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye #1 doesn't really do anything wrong, but doesn't catch my interest, even with a fave-rave writer handling the words. Read Full Review
