All X-23 wants is to get to Madripoor, but when Gambit agrees to do a favor for an old friend, she finds herself roped into a deadly battle against a gang of ruthless pirates.
So let's talk opinions. From the first page to the last, this issue was stunning to look at. That cover is amazing. Pirate Gambit and Laura look so bad-ass. The interior art is so good too. Very Animeish which is pretty cool. The shark battle scenes were sweet. The story was all right. A nice filler issue with a bit of character growth for Laura, showing us that she is compassionate and not a bloodthirsty killer. It also seems that we might be getting some Gambit background stories in future issues. Always a fun time to learn about the mysterious Cajun's past. My one issue with this book is that some of the humor and sarcasm that was evident in the first few books have disappeared. I hope it returns soon. Still, I am extremely looking forward to the X-23/Daken crossover. That is a battle I have been wanting to see for a few years now. I'm betting if they do fight, it will be awesome. The art in this issue is an improvement over recent issues if for no other reason than it sports only one artist throughout. Sana Takeda's manga-inspired visuals aren't really the best fit for this sort of story, and her blank, almost soulless facial work doesn't help matters. However, Takeda's colors are bright and attractive. Fans of Mike Choi's X-23 work will find this to be a similarly sleek and shiny book, but the storytelling could have been better. Read Full Review
There is some great character work here from Liu and Takeda, who make a formidably combination that I'd like to see on this title a bit more often. Some awkward plotting and even more awkward bits art, however, keep this issue from fully reaching its potential. This is a fun read and there is a lot to love about it, but the issues add up and keep it from jumping further up the Rankings. Read Full Review
