It's like a bad joke: get a six-issue miniseries, fill it with flashbacks, advance the actual plot by one hour on a good day. Alan Scott: The Green Lantern is badly structured, there's no way around that, but it's such a deeply disappointing book that that's somehow the least of its faults.

First things first: time-travelling in order to pass through walls is needlessly overcomplicated. Alan has been able to phase through walls (in a ghost-like manner, is the image the 1940s comics want to invoke) since his very first appearance, he's also previously been shown as able to time travel (Gotham Knights #10 from December 2000 calling!), there's simply no possible need for one power to inform the other except in the service of this book's endless efforts to make Alan look as naive as possible in what should be the heyday of his career.

The "twist" is a far cry from what we've been told in Vlad's 'Who's Who' entry in The New Golden Age primer, and even details like the ring being from a women's college betray internal continuity errors (issue #1 of this very same series told us it's a Southern Conference College Baseball Championship ring -- very much a real thing). Then again, there seems to be no continuity or canon this miniseries respects (Alan owning lakefront property? I'd hazard a guess he wouldn't need to share a room with Doiby Dickles in All-American/GL/Comic Cavalcade if he was out there owning a house on a lake).

What's deeply troubling to me is the repeated portrayal of gay intimacy as purely transactional (the rent boys from the previous issue, Vlad & his commanding officer), gay love as built on lies ("I really could sell you on anything."), and gay characters steeped in stereotypes (the anachronistic use of "old queen" in #2, Alan's motel bath here). If the fact hadn't been highly publicized, I never would have guessed there are any LGBT creators involved in this book. At the end of the day, the main character has next to nothing in common with the Alan Scott we've come to know over the decades and that has nothing at all to do with his sexuality & all to do with his characterisation. more

It's unbelievable how darknightnews gives 10/10 to garbage comics with social messaging, while giving 6 or 7 to decent or good comics. Don't trust their reviews.

This is terrible. Selina's characterization in this is awful, but other characters come off poorly too.

It's really painful to read this and see how much all the things which made Catwoman likeable get destroyed. She comes off as a stupid, abusive, cruel villain in this. I cannot fathom how someone can take this character - Tom King's "love means caring for someone, that's all that love is" will play in my head forever - and turn her into this asshole who screams at her ex-fiancee and gloats that his parents' murder was justified because they were wealthy and their killer wanted money. Her denigration of Bruce's mission in order to promote stupid Twitter hashtags of "eat the rich" speak to her stupidity and ineptitude. His charitable works have done a lot more for Gotham than her campaign to teach Joker goons to be better criminals.

It kind of feels like Howard looked at all the critique in media of how certain female characters are received - like Skyler in Breaking Bad - and said "let me create a truly evil woman" in response.

It's really disappointing that Chris is participating in this or that DC allowed this to be published. Other than Valmont, the other Howard low point, I can't think of any place else where Selina was portrayed this poorly. Even when she was a villain, at least she was an honest villain, instead of emotionally abusive and dumb.

I don't see how they can bring this character back from this hell.

I can't think of a worse kick off issue to an event. Truly terrible from Tini and Chips idiotic premise to Hawthorne's very rushed and sloppy art. Nothing works and I feel this event will just get people to drop Batman. Since no one reads Tini's Catwoman I can only hope Gotham Wars' failure will cause DC to finally wake up and remove her from Selina. With a new writer being tasked to rehab the character. more

I expected the worst and am still baffled as to how terrible this is.

The foundation of the event is still ridiculous. You cannot just pay the majority of criminals not to commit crime. You certainly cannot find the millions of dollars in funds (MONTHLY) necessary to do so by stealing jewels from a hundred or so billionaires in the city. They would leave the city. They would put hits out on you. They would hire armed security. These trained thieves would die or quickly be arrested, and furthermore how the hell are dozens or hundreds of thieves going to hit the same 100 billionaires constantly without stepping on each other's toes? And they're going to give away 15% of their earnings to charity? Bullshit.

The plan is stupid, Selina is stupid for coming up with it, and the Batfamily members that consider it are stupid. For some reason Howard and Zdarsky are on a mission to make Selina as cold and unlikeable as possible. She insults Bruce and blames the failed wedding on him, even though she was the one who left him at the altar because she thought it would be best for him and the city. Even though this conflict was already resolved and bringing it up again is retrogressive. Even though they got unofficially married sometime after this so what the hell is the point of bringing up the first plan to get married?

This event looks to be a contrived mess that disregards basic logic as well as basic understanding of the characters written within. The dialogue and conflict are forced, and Selina in particular is egregiously out of character to the extent that it feels like DC is actively trying to make people hate her. She has insulted or snubbed Bruce for no good reason the past three times she's seen him and as a big Catwoman fan it's extremely discouraging to see her written this way. The dialogue of the rest of the Batfamily leaves much to be desired as well, and as a whole I think this event was likely written with the end in mind rather than an actual desire to tell a good and comprehensive story. more

I'd just be repeating everything these other fine reviewers have expressed so I won't go into detail. DC doesn't have to let writers like Tini Howard ruin their characters by letting them do any stupid thing they want. Rein it in. Pay editors better and let them do their jobs and maybe we could avoid this kind of garbage. From Knight Terrors to this??? Are they trying to drive us away?

I'm a fan of Zdarsky, you can tell when he is writing Batman that his voice is good, but its lost in the middle of uninteresting and bad storylines. You can tell when its Zdarsky or Tini Howard writing and thats a bad sign for an event...

Well it was an awful issue regarding selina they couldnot have written her worse than this if you are even slightly a selina kyle fan you will definatly get headache by reading it like the worst portral of the character i have seen in ages
The real selina wouldnot talk to bruce like this, she is smart and doesnot make stupid decisions she is caring and a great woman but here we see an emotionless cold woman who is so idiot and only she cares about is her and her stupid plan i am pretty damn sure i will understand zorenar aproach and characrer much more than selina in this event

Zdarsky has lost his way. He himself is a good enough writer, but he constantly learns on poor writers to help him develop ideas and it shows. We saw how the Failsafe arc ended (The insane/dumb way Batman makes it back from the Moon was Ryan Norths idea as stated by Chip).

Now he works with Tini, a writer who books constantly drop after she takes over and who much of the time has her books cancelled due to how poorly they are written. It is clear this 'event' is being used to boost the faltering Catwoman sales and it shows.

This issue is a mess. I don't really want to go into more detail as it is depressing to contemplate this book, but skip it. Skip this event. Its not worth your money or time. Even if you are a completionist, just save yourself the money. Don't do this to yourself. more

Absolute garbage

When the tide turns, people will remember how DC comics backed an extreme and negative ideology.

Nth metal is too heavy for someone that isn't a Thanigarian to use. Axelrod doesn't know what she's doing. Once again it's the Galaxy show.

DC has gone out and got a diversity hire to write an LGBTQ+ book in hopes of gaining new readers in an emerging market. Smart if done right but here they again take an established character and begin the process of moving them into a different sexual orientation. I may be wrong and Kendra may not move away from being straight but all the signs so far in this book point to it, which will be weird since her and Hawkman are supposed to be intertwined throughout time. DC figures they can use a lesser character for this without upsetting too many fans and there will of course be people who don't care either way about sexuality and just want to read something with Hawkgirl. Some people will go out and buy it and love it just because it's an LGBTQ+ book (which is DC's intention) and others won't just because of that same thing. Both are perfectly fine...see how that works? That is basically it for this book though. The book is all about Hawkgirl's drama and Galaxy and her lifestyle being showcased with some super villain shenanigans sprinkled in. The villain just happens to need multiple identical lives that are surrounded with nth metal exposure. Convenient. Many have said the art is great, and they are correct, but as good as the art is the story is that bad. At least in this issue Kendra isn't the most unlikable person on the planet. Bland, boring and just an excuse to showcase the writers creation instead of the title character. I don't know if DC got what they wanted with Jadzia Axelrod but I think the LGBTQ+ community (hell, all of us) deserves a comic story with some meat on it's bones instead of this tripe. I said it before and I'll say it again. ONE-TRICK PONY!

Good job DC. Tim Board didn't even like this.

It feels like so many writers today serve themselves over the characters they are supposed to be writing and I think Hawkgirl #2 is an example of that. Only thing I can say I liked better than the last issue is Kendra didn't seem to be on her period for the entire book. So glad she can be civil with the writers characters so much more so than with her actual friends and teammates. Stupid.

DC should rename this series Galaxy featuring Hawkgirl, because so far this series so far reads like Jadzia Axelrod is far more interested in writing her own original character than the titular character. This issue revolved around Galaxy’s place in the world far more than it did Kendra’s until the main antagonist showed up, but even then it focused far more on Galaxy and her girlfriend. The only compliments I’ll give this is the art, which is stunning. Another thing that was handled well was how Hawkgirl’s past lives were explained, it is clear that Axelrod knows her Hawkgirl history, but wants to write a Galaxy book instead. What a waste of a Hawkgirl title. more

I'm upset because this will be canceled after 7 issues and we won't get another Hawkman series for half a decade as a result. Fuck you DC for failing to promote Venditti and Hitch's Hawkman run and letting it fall into the sales abyss.

But what am I saying? We have the illustrious Galaxy and her sidekick Kendra to make up for it.

I had high-hopes for this. I love Hawkgirl, especially from the animated series. Well, this ain't her. I had never heard of Jadzia A. before, but apparently she's an activist. I'm so tired of activists injecting their identity politics into comics where they don't belong. You want to write a slice-of-life book, that's fine, but don't make a superhero comic into a slice-of-life book it's just going to turn readers like me off. When you have two or three self-proclaimed lesbians in less than 20 pages, then you have a problem. This book is completely meaningless and what's with Kendra's hair? Where is the long red hair? Whatever. I'm out and I'm staying away from anything that has Jadzia's name on it. more

Some notes so people can understand where I come from in this review.

I have read Axelrod's other work Galaxy: The Prettiest Star (I got it free from someone who was just give the stuff away for free when I picked up other books from them). I would give the fist issue a 5/10.

For this book The art get the 2.5, its good. Fun and nice to look at.

As for the story: 0/10 for the story. It butchers Hawkgirl by making her a terribly unlikable and moody character. Galaxy saves the day, does all the work and everyone knows how awesome she is. She is a slice of life character mostly who apparently is also better than hawkgirl as a hero.

Only read this book if you really hate Hawkgirl and like to see her humiliated and poorly written, or love Galaxy and think that she is the 'bestest bestest hero in the universe'. more

Wow, I'm actually agreeing with Gabe Hernandez for once. The fact that we're getting this instead of a Hawkman series from Venditti is an insult to me.

No more agendas. No more self inserts. No more soap boxes. No more character assassinations. We just want good comic book stories. This is an abortion of a comic and deserves to be used as toilet paper. The art is the only good element.

Gender/sexuality ideology with no connection to the titular character. A hot pile of trash from an awful writer. Leftist propaganda disguised as a comic book. All you want to do is read an enjoyable comic book and you get this self insert, social issues trash.

PS: I do have to refer to the art of Amancay Nahuelpan. As always, it's good, but the writing is too terrible to bump the score.
