In the end, Hellboy fans should be rather excited about the Black Goddess as it seems to be the beginning of a much needed transitional period. But while the mystery Mignola and Urcadi produce is certainly intriguing, this introductory issue never really seems to take off. In order to set up a large-scale, wide-branching story, Urcadi is forced to lay a lot of groundwork, and thereby dissolves any real tension or excitement.
