Reviewing something so excellent is tough because its The Goon and if you havent already checked it out, you need to. Its surreal, but also strangely grounded with the humour of the characters. Having never read any of The Goon, I still found plenty to enjoy out of this one-shot. The humor and art are on point throughout, and there are many layers to every bar The Goon and Franky visit. Fans of Powell and newcomers are sure to find something to enjoy here. Read Full Review
If I do have one criticism of it, it is that it is a tad to short. 24 pages for a stand alone like this doesn't seem right, a one-shot for this type of book does, but I wanted more pages. It just made the whole bar hoping seem a bit rushed and conclusion very abrupt. But wanting more is surely not a bad thing! Read Full Review
"One for the Road" makes for a very fitting title. It's a comic you read because you're already in love with the The Goon. You know what to expect from Eric Powell's absurd epic and need another shot before you return to your Goon-less life. Wrapped in a simple one-and-done story is all of the humor and craftsmanship that has come to be associated with the series. It may not be a high point for the series, but that does not mean it doesn't contain depth worth exploring beyond a single reading. It's a good comic to snag before heading home. Read Full Review
THE GOON stands on its own as a valid comic, and ONE FOR THE ROAD is a good continuation of the characters and their story. Goon and Franky help a down-on-his-luck sailor find his buddy and get back to base before they get into trouble. On the way, they run into Cowboys, Cultists, a Nazi-King Kong, and a bevy of Hollywood stars. No Spoilers. Obviously, THE GOON is not the most serious comic in the world. In the literal sense " it is a funny book " a Comic Book. If you're looking for an action-comedy that's heavy on the fun and definitely not too serious - you're going to love THE GOON. Okay, I acknowledge that a seven-month delay exists between the release of issue #44 and the current offering. However, I am willing to concede some time because Powell runs the show himself. Because of the unparalleled quality in every aspect of this book, I will always give The Goon slack. I, like everyone else, would love to have monthly installments of the book. It's that damn good. As gorgeous as his art is, it's Powell's scripts that really make the Goon work, with every page having at least one laugh-out-loud moment. Other stories on this series have been a touch more serious, but One For The Road is purely going for the gags and it gets them spot-on. Read Full Review
Unfortunately this issue isn't that good, but more of a kick start or practice dry run for Powell having been out of the game for so long. There's some humor to be had and the art is good as always, but this is a very skippable one-shot. Read Full Review
