"Nation X" is off to a good start, and while Fraction's perpetually juggling a lot of stories in "Uncanny X-Men," it's not feeling out of hand. I'm curious to see just what Fraction will do with the X-Men's Utopia, and based on this first issue it will be fun to find out. If you're looking for a good jumping-on point, this is it. The only thing that prevents me from awarding this issue a higher bullet-rating is the sense that it's very much an issue of setup for a new story arc, in which not a huge amount actually happens. That said, Fraction covers some pretty interesting topics, retrospectively reinforcing the "Utopia" crossover with his in-depth discussion of the book's new status quo -- and that final page is sure to make X-Men fans keen to read the next issue. The story isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but Matt Fraction does some interesting things by approaching the story in ways that most writers wouldn't (I know I certainly wouldn't have though to address how Asteroid M would get fresh water). The problem is, and always will be as long as he is allowed to pretend to be an artist, Greg Land's poorly traced art. It's gotten to the point that Land isn't even thinking about what he is tracingcharacter's expressions rarely match what they are saying and he is using the same faces/poses over and over again.
