Batman (2011) #33

Jul 23, 2014

This is a great closing to the Zero Year, and provides an explanation of what Zero Year even means. It's a great display of Batman matching wits in a final confrontation with the Riddler. But the highlight for me were two great Alfred moments. If you dropped out after Death of the Family, you truly missed something great!

Harley Quinn (2013) #8

The art was enjoyable, and I liked seeing Harley with her hammer again. But this also drug out the assassin story line for another issue rather than moving along. While some of the poop jokes were well worth a chuckle (Gnu 52!!!), others felt like they were just abusing the gag. I'm still enjoying the series, but I found myself looking forward to the next issue more than enjoying the current one. The series has been better than this issue, so still a fairly worthwhile pickup.

Red Lanterns #32

Continues to build to a great confrontation between the two factions. Supregirl's moments with Guy seemed inevitable. (I hope she is used to snap Saint Walker out of his funk, but that's another story) The Ratchet mention was great! Another impressive entry from an unbelievably turned around book!

Red Lanterns #33

While a step down for this series, it's still a cut above a lot of other books you could get. In the year (already?!?) of post-Johns Lantern books, this issue is a slight bump in an otherwise enjoyable road.

Red Lanterns Annual #1

Charles Soule has quietly crafted a narrative that makes a very unexpected character the focus of a great ongoing gag and the most emotional moment of this issue. Soule's run has given people that wanted to like a Red Lanterns book many reasons to like it. The finale to this story should be great, and there are several moments in this issue that increase the anticipation to read what comes next. Sepulveda's art is good to see again as well. I'd definitely recommend this book! (It would have been an 8, but it got the extra .5 for having Batman yet refraining from making The Dark Knight any part of marketing this book)

Star-Spangled War Stories: G.I. Zombie #1

Jul 24, 2014

A nice debut for a different title from DC. I enjoyed the art, which is unique among the rest of the DC lineup I've seen lately. I also enjoyed that it was setting up an interesting plot and allowing characters to develop through the story. Since it is a zombie title, there were some wonderfully disgusting moments. But it also had some enjoyable humor as well. I would recommend people check this out.

Superman (2011) #32

Had a couple references to things from other books that I wasn't up to speed on, but nothing that was too difficult to catch onto pretty quick. Also, Turn your hat around Clark. You are a grown man and look ridiculous like that. A promising start that does a nice job introducing a character I want to know more about. Not much more can be asked of a new creative team debut!
