Villains United #3

Jul 22, 2005

With a simple and yet powerfully grim story and generally excellent art, this is an engrossing read that is difficult to put down. Old characters are revamped and brutality reigns supreme! Basically, you have to buy or at least read this comic - but please, please, please dont let your kids anywhere near it.

Wonder Woman (1987) #219

Aug 8, 2005

An epic battle and a shocking finish. The only thing that brings this down in any way is that it steps into the murky waters of cross-over city, meaning that you technically need to read all the Superman titles before you read this (you dont), and OMAC as well. Apparently, you certainly need to read this before OMAC #4. A pity really, but aside from all of that, this issue itself is fantastic.

Astonishing X-Men (2004) #11

Aug 8, 2005

Another class act from Whedon and Cassaday. The Danger arc now builds to its finale, which - if the last panel of this issue is anything to go by - will be spectacular indeed. This entire series has been and continues to be a must for any X-Men fan.

JLA #116

Jul 28, 2005

Anyone who liked Identity Crisis will like this. It carries the story on well, leading on in a logical matter and leaving the reader guessing as to what will happen next. The characters are well handled, and there is a nicely showcased action sequence to start off. All in all, a fitting episode in what could certainly be a major arc in JLA history, and maybe even that of the DC universe.

New Avengers #7

Jul 28, 2005

The only thing that brings this issue down is that it really is a set-up. This is the opening for a broader arc, and we are left with a tantalising cliff-hanger ending. The story is only just starting, and we are waiting for the big payoff that didn't really materialise in "Breakout." But standing as a part of a bigger arc, it promises great things to come. A great issue with comedy, action and great art, it is cleverly written and carries on a generally successful run for New Avengers. Long may it continue.

Birds of Prey (1998) #84

Aug 8, 2005

Solid, albeit unspectacular. This issue is about build up rather than pay-off. That comes in the next issues. But this is good in its own right, having, as I say, some laugh out loud moments, combined with some genuinely touching ones (take a look at Wildcat comforting Black Canary as Oracle is prepared for surgery). As it stands, Im thoroughly looking forward to the next issue.

Batman #642

Jul 28, 2005

If you're a Croc fan, pick this up. If you're a Hatter fan, pick this up. If not... well, it's okay. There's nothing wrong with this issue at all really, its just that it isn't that engaging. But like I've said, that's my own bias to the characters speaking - especially after having really liked the last stories with Red Hood, it's a bit of a let down. Hey, at least it doesn't have Zeiss in it.
