Death comes for us all. But for Gil the Toymaker, the visit is an eternal tragedy!
Every year the holiday gift giver visits children all over the world on a special night, but Gil's immortality comes at a cost. Forced to do the work of Death, carrying a list of ready-to-harvest souls alongside his naughty and nice lists, Gil gives toys AND takes souls all in one night! But as the Toymaker reflects on the relationship he's had with Death for several millennia, an associate reveals a scheme that may just put an end to Death's contract (and, perhaps, Death himself!)

Sep 03, 2024Death Comes for the Toymaker is a compelling dive into a mythology that is not often studied, with enough creative license, betrayals, and twists to keep readers engaged. Writer Dakota Brown and illustrator Ryan Cody are a good team here, balancing just the right amount of words with visually interesting illustrations. Each two-page spread plays with various panel layouts and is another effective storytelling tool. This is a worthy addition to library and school book club discussions, and even higher education classrooms, as a creative tie-in to study Mesopotamian mythology. Death Comes for the Toymaker is also a companion leisure read-alike for titles such as Lore Olympus, Ava’s Demon, The Sandman, and even Hellboy. Read Full Review
