"Free States Rising" concludes here as the final battle for the city of Manhattan, as well as the fate of the entire country, begins to unfold. Matty Roth, the ultimate embedded journalist, reconnects with his on-again off-again friend Zee, who finds Matty a very changed man since she last saw him.
There isn't much to say about Riccardo Burchielli's at this point that hasn't already been said. He captures all the grime and flavor of the DMZ; a fact that is even more noticeable in this post-bombing phase. Burchielli's earlier pages stand out more thanks to their visual variety, whereas the later pages are more quiet and confined. Burchielli doesn't quite sell the emotion of the final page as well as he could have, but otherwise this is another strong effort from both creators. Read Full Review
