Wow! Ancetral Recall is a rare book that works as a fun read and a page turner, but also totally goes deep in ways that will kind of blow your mind. I love the way Jordan Clark approaches the story on so many levels. He does things with the narrative that I have not seen too often in fiction--such as the multi-generational leads of Melvin and Myran. So powerful and I can only imagine what a child will see through their eyes. I love Melvin's deliverate mojo, and how he is always percolating in his own way. The way Jordan Clark weaves historical characters is sweet and profound. This isn't a contrived premise--each charcater moves the story forward in a compelling way, and teaches you about history at the same time. I relate to Jordan Clark's description of "history by osmosis" and I really wonder how it must feel as a person to have to fill in so many gaps. My favorite part of this story is when Melvin fulfills a childhood fantasy and saves the day with the help one of his heroes, Bill Pickett, the first black cowboy star. Writing-wise, the voice is very cool and continually draws you in. I love Melvin's thought bubble of squiggly gibberish that pops up at select moments when things get tense. It's so fun to try to fill in the blanks. This is truly inspired writing. The artwork is beauful. This is a great book and one I highly recommend it to readers of all ages.
