Overall I found myself really enjoying this issue nation. There wasn't a thing I didn't enjoy about this issue. I mean Greg Pak's writing and Brett Booth's art work for me is a winning team. One of the best things about this issue is that you don't have to read prior issues to understand it and that to me is really important with some of these villain issues. And I am a big fan of Brett Booth. I loved his Supergirl in his Justice League run. And I think this Doomsday is a monstrosity of spikes and brawn. On top of that, we I love the switch in styles to create that storybook feel to the Word of El. It is hard for me to believe I almost didn't pick up this book. Before I even touch on the story, I have to mention how amazing the art is. No page has wasted space, there are several full page spreads of delicious action AND halfway through the book the Art gets stylized, the colors change and it's absolutely amazing it's one team doing a swap like that. Greg Paks issues during Villains Month, both this and Action Comics #23.1 have given readers plenty of reasons to check out his upcoming run on Action Comics. Doomsday #1 is an enjoyable entry point for new readers, while teasing the canonical status of one of the most popular stories of all time. Paks use of a bedtime story to frame the narrative makes for a solid read. And the artwork by Brett Booth helps elevate this issue above the letdown of unanswered questions. Read Full Review

This was a fantastic issue and although not quite the Doomsday issue I was expecting it was still very enjoyable. The issue also had a lot of drama and excitement, with some of the best artwork that I have ever seen from Brett Booth. There was also plenty of emotion and even a bit of lightheartedness, and if there was more of Doomsday this could have easily have been a perfect issue. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this, especially if you're fans of Pak's work, but if you are Doomsday fans I'd recommend caution as you may be disappointed. Read Full Review

Brett Booth does some of his best work in years here. This issue looks great. There's an energy to the pages; a sense of destruction and violence when Doomsday slams to the ground. The best bit comes during the previously mentioned fairytale section. Booth switches up his style and shows us something dynamic and exciting, a new side of his work that we haven't seen. Honestly, I thought for sure that section had been drawn by a different artist, it's that unique. This isn't a great Villains Month title, but it's a pretty fun read that looks fantastic. I would of really preferred a straight forward story of Remembrance Day like the book started.  But what we got was a cluttered story that didn't seem to know what it wanted to be.  The artwork by Brett Booth was fantastic like always, but when I end a story and I don't know what exactly went on, I find myself robbed a bit.  Greg Pak is a decent writer so I have no idea why the middle of this issue becomes the Death of Superman story.  Just seemed like filler that didn't need to be there. Batman/Superman #3.1 was fine. It was pretty much exactly what you'd expect. While it does have some ramifications for the upcoming crossover that will be ravaging the Superman-family titles, fans looking for an interesting standalone story will be disappointing. Hardcore readers may appreciate the tiny hints of world-building in service of whatever world-shattering event is coming up for Krypton, but everyone else can safely avoid this. Read Full Review

As the only character to ever kill Superman, Doomsday holds a special place in the DC Universe. Unfortunately, the "Doomsday" issue of Villains Month is a jarring mass of flashbacks and perspective shifts. It does nothing to address the character's confusing place in the New 52, and in actual fact features little of the titular villain at all. There are some interesting moments, with visually interesting art, but it isn't enough to prevent "Doomsday" from feeling like a missed opportunity. Read Full Review

But good, or even great, art cannot make a terrible story palatable or acceptable. And that is the case here. After the enormous disappointment of all of Greg Pak's work for DC that I've read so far, I'm not inclined to support the writer in any way. I just can't stomach such terrible stories.
