The overarching element of the Harlem Renaissance was a devotion to creating work that would be reflective of the realities of African-American life. It wasn't about transcending the bitter conditions in which it was forced to exist, but facing them directly. Many of today's black artists are inspired by the literary aspects of this movement. With this latest bit of literary expression, amid all the supernatural things that go bump in the night, Bitter Rootpays tribute to that culture for its humanity, dignity and creativity.

DC Vertigo has always highlighted bold voices with socially relevant and creative stories that appeal to all readers. Border Town talks about identity in a culture that is obsessed with borders, whether they be geographical, ideological, racial, or gendered, draped in modern satire and ancient folklore. It's a comic that strikes a balance in divisive times where logic and tolerance have become mutually exclusive. Who needs a wall when the monsters may already be living next door?

This series' feminist sensibilities are overt at times and subtle at others. It's definitely a creative choice, but one that is well-executed. Given the ongoing evolution of our culture's views on feminism, which is largely driven by young people who seek to make critical changes, it's absolutely safe to say that this series will find its audience. With high-minded visuals and an energetic storyline, Man-Eatersis full of promise. It's a comic with claws, one that provokes and intrigues. Blood is certain to spill. It's perfect.
