That's the sort of careful effort that went into “Herald: Lovecraft & Tesla” – the kind that produces added value and enjoyment upon re-reading. What looks like a simple buddy-buddy pairing on its face really becomes something much stronger in the actual telling. Strong character definition, exaggerations made in the name of pure fun, and an attention to detail make “Herald” a book to keep on your radar. Its not perfect. There are moments when characters dialogue doesnt seem to match up as if they are having two different conversations, but there are definitely some interesting ideas here. If you enjoy historical fiction at all, this book is probably going to be right up your alley. I know im going to be sticking around to see where this story goes. Read Full Review
Both Tesla and Lovecraft are at personal and professional crossroads, which -- as readers know from other comic books, movie and television shows -- makes for the best dramatic environment to cook up a good story. There are ideas here that might develop into something clever and interesting but this first issue simply feels obvious and shallow. We know these people and what their varied skills, histories, and achievements were. The true challenge is to take these known quantities and expand them, enrich them, and turn them into something more interesting and powerful than the mundane histories we already know.
