The entire world knows the stark reality: everyone who manifests superpowers goes insane and becomes a threat to society. So, when Jake Roth develops superpowers but somehow keeps his sanity, he must decide whether to put himself at risk by using his powers to help people or do nothing and save himself while innocent people around him get hurt.
The First Hero looks like it can be a breakout hit for Action Lab with it's smart and tight storytelling mixed with a little of that historical revisionism/reinvention that is all the rage these days (see X-Men First Class and X-Men Days of Future Past). The First Hero might borrow heavily from the X-Men and Watchmen universe of ideas, but is looking to strike out on its own...and I for one want to see where this story will go because of that single fact. The artwork definitely has a classic feel to it, lots of deep shadows and cross-hatching, which adds to the overall moodiness of the panels. Ruttgaizer and Sevy have a knack for depicting harrowing action sequences at a truly break-neck pace. All in all the book has potential, even if the first issue doesn't quite light the fire that it sets out to ignite. Read Full Review
