Though it's the first annual, this release is impeccable in its consistency and charm, more than worth its slightly increased cover price (though that "realistic" cover by Al Garza is kind of terrifying) and also helpful as an introductory piece for new fans or those who have been curious about the series. Danny may have ruffled some feathers when he claimed Fast and Furious 6 is more consistent than the entire Bat franchise at this point, but I think we can all agree that Adventure Time continues to be the real franchise to beat. With six strong stories, none of which are lacking in creativity, “Adventure Time Annual” #1 is a rousing success. Along with the 30 pages of story, the issue offers a small pinup gallery, with art by some of the featured artist. The stories are short (as they need to fit in six of them) and pretty breezy light-hearted reads, with little story content, but lots of fun, goofy stuff. The art is varies, but its all excellent, and definitely the highlight of the book in the face of the shortness of the stories. Overall, if youre an adventure time fan or someone just looking for a book thatll be a fun, light read this is an excellent choice, as well as someone who does intend to share the book with or give it to someone younger. This annual is wacky, it's irreverent, it's educational, and it's FUN. Fans of the animated series and comics will find familiar faces (minus the ladies!) and fresh stories from a range of creators. Like all anthologies, "Adventure Time Annual" #1 is a mixed bag. However, for those who want to see how other creative teams fare with the "Adventure Time" cast and universe, it's definitely worth a look, particularly for Carlson and Nguyen's "No Dogs Allowed" and Bing and Monster's "The Lemon Sea."
