In this second issue, Brandon Dayton, creator of one of YALSA's 2008 Top Ten Teen Graphic Novels The Green Monk, combines folklore from Russia, Norway, and France with "The Tailor's Daughter," a journey that follows a young woman as she outwits an unruly, cruel giant.
I don't see this series ever dropping below a 4/5 for me. They have constantly shown dedication not only to the original sources, but the soul of the stories they present. Fables can often be a minefield of outdated prejudice and backward ways of thinking, but the Storyteller series continues to shine a light on the heart of what makes these stories great. While it is somewhat dark, the story is never the less entertaining regardless of the simplicity of its conception. Most people think of Jim Henson and see singing frogs, purple curvy nosed things and spectacularly dressed swine. But this story is much closer to the films The Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal in both tone and execution. This may be the second chapter of four stories, but it will be interesting to see where the next two chapters go. If you have the chance, read it. If you do not, I would still suggest reading it.
