There's been a bit of flurry surrounding the upcoming "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" film. This book doesn't play off of that, in front of that, or tie into it, save for the "Planet of the Apes" brand. This is "Planet of the Apes" boiled down to what made it successful the first time around: ape and human engaged in philosophical conflict that becomes embodied by physical conflict. This is an exciting and gripping story that grabbed me by the nape of the neck and locked me for an intensely uninterrupted read. Read Full Review
Carlos Magno's artwork is as strong as the writing. The mix of early industrial urban landscapes with the untamed, natural jungle elements shows that he's put a lot of thought into the world being constructed here. The characters' clothing, the grandeur of the ape city while still maintaining a certain wild look and the detailed texture brought out by the meticulous linework... it's all quite pleasing to the eye. There's nothing about the artwork in this comic book that I didn't enjoy. Read Full Review
The artwork also proved to be a delightful surprise. The highly textured style suits the book well and is very much in the vein of the film. The designs for the city are a nice hybrid between ape and human sensibilities, a subtle hint to the fact that humans still have a respectable role within society. Although it didn't come out of the gates swinging, Planet of the Apes #1 easily lands in the positive end of the licensed comic book spectrum. Read Full Review
Planet of the Apes #1 is a promising start to the new series, and a thoughtful picking up of where the film franchise left off. Battle for the Planet of the Apes was clearly rewritten to accommodate a slashed budget, but the best thing about comics is that you don't need a budget to create a suitably epic sci-fi parable.
