The good thing about this book is that there really is some great content here. Unfortunately, except for the Concrete story, the big-name stuff isnt what works for me. Its the lesser-known creators and more experimental characters that make these 80 pages worth the price. Read Full Review
Like so many anthologies, "Dark Horse Presents" #1 is a big mixture of hits and misses. That said? The hits easily outweigh the misses and the "not quite" entries. If each issue of the new "Dark Horse Presents" has stories by people like Chadwick, McNeil, and Chelsea, I'll keep buying each issue, guaranteed. Read Full Review
Dark Horse Presents #1 is a mostly solid collection of stories and a promising return of a series that can serve as a platform for readers to discover new talents or get acquainted (or reacquainted) with established ones. This opening issue falls way too heavily on the established talent, but maybe that's for the best to grab readers and keep them coming back. The original Dark Horse Presents gave us comics like Sin City, so it's exciting to see what future classics will debut in the pages of this new series. Read Full Review
Like most anthologies, though, this is a mixed bag. The Concrete story is a wise choice to open the book. While it's a painfully predictable story, it's also entertaining and demonstrates just how much creator Paul Chadwick has successfully diverged from and experimented with the super-hero genre. The Frank Miller interview and Xerxes teaser were a bit of a letdown; we really don't get all that much here. The Adams piece is shocking with the level of brutality that's depicted, but it's effective. What's offputting about this crime story is his decision to shove an alien-invasion plot into it; the amalgam, at least it stands in this issue, doesn't work. Chaykin's heist story feels a little too familiar, especially when one gets to the scenes of domestic discord - it's nothing we haven't seen from Chaykin before.
