A "Legion Academy" single-issue story starring the enthusiastic (and sometimes ditzy) Legionnaire-in-training, Comet Queen! We learn her origin tale and the tragedies she has endured on her path to graduation.
I don't like when seemingly needless bad things happen to characters, and I don't know why they decided to do this to Comet Queen, who has always been a fun, if not the most effective, ditz. And maybe I'm just overly sensitive to things right now, but they essentially just re-booted the character here, which there's been more than enough of, with apparently much more to come. It's actually the non-origin parts of the issue that I found myself enjoying, like Comet Queen and Glorith's growing relationship, or watching the Academy kids go through a training exercise. Some of them (Dragonwing, Variable Lad, and Gravity Kid in particular) still feel like they could use a spotlight or two to flesh them out, but with just two issues left before DC's reboot in September, I suspect we're rapidly running out of time in that regard. Still, it's been a fun little series, and I'm going to miss it once it's gone. Hopefully something similar is still store for us come September. You'd think revolving an entire issue around one character would do more to make her palatable, but almost the opposite effect happens. This series is dangerously close to joining its sibling on the Dropped List. Read Full Review
