"The Deep" part 1, continued from BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS SPECIAL #1! The mystery of who and what the Insiders are opens into a labyrinth of dread and deceit as the new incarnation of the Outsiders follow Batman's final directives into a heart of darkness.
The issue is essentially all set-up, but that doesn't stop it from being very entertaining. My one complaint is that, as was the case with last issue, it's tough to figure out exactly what is happening in the cliffhanger scene that's supposed to set up the team's upcoming antagonist. And of course, there's the annoying Origins and Omens back-up, which at least serves as an informative roll call for new readers. Finally, I won't fault Lee Garbett for falling short of the masterful work presented by Adam Kubert in last week's one-shot. With Nightwing having seen it's final issue last week, Robin this week, I would say Outsiders is the definitive Batman story currently hitting shelves. Now Battle for the Cowl is right around the corner, and DC is definitely pimping that book as the next chapter of the "Batman RIP" saga, but for my money, Outsiders is the logical continuation of what would happen if Batman really disappeared. Outsiders #15 was a quality read. Tomasi makes sure that Outsiders #15 is very new reader friendly. While this title did not boast any action, there is no doubt that Tomasi will end up delivering a balanced read with nice action and good character work. Outsiders #15 is the perfect time for new readers to jump aboard this title. If you like super hero teams and are no satisfied with the tepid reads that DC is giving us with the Justice League of America and Teen Titans then definitely give the Outsiders a try. While this book is enjoyable, it does feel like a decompressed title on downers, slowing almost to a crawl under the weight of its own exposition. We still have no clue who the mysterious foe is, nor have we seen the team lurch into battle. I look forward to seeing what this team is like when the "batcrap" (using a term from Creeper) hits the fan. Hopefully other readers will stick around long enough to find out as well.
