I was buying the previous Sheena book before I felt it ran out of steam. Hopefully with a distinct setup, story compression will not eke out the fun elements that is so prevalent in this engaging first issue. Read Full Review
The right elements are in place for a really good story. However, there's a lot of potential silliness that seems quite ready to swoop in at nearly every corner of the plot. The drama has real potential. The political end of Val Verde seems to be resting quite clearly in the background of the story. The fictional locale for pop action fiction in films, comics, and video games doesn't often get a very close look, so it'll be interesting to see if DeSouza and company are able to place it a bit more in the foreground of an action thriller that's grounded in political drama. SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE FATAL EXAMS #1 kicks off a new adventure when Sheena goes undercover at an elite girls school to investigate attacks on a nearby nature preserve. De Souza and Clark Jr. handily bring new readers up to speed with brilliant character work, two intriguing mysteries, and excellent art by Silva and Spiller. Sheena's school life can bring the pace down a bit too much at times, but there's still fun moments in these sequences as well. Some moments don't quite land, like in one particular tear-filled panel later in the issue, and there are some clunky moments of dialogue or artwork that pop up randomly. That said, I greatly enjoyed Sheena: Queen of the Jungle Fatal Exams #1, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this wild ride goes. Read Full Review
