Scully and Wynn learn that the promise of paradise is a lie. Chuck Dixon and Butch Guice bring the first arc of this new ongoing to an explosive finale. What they thought was a sanctuary proves to be a death trap. The two friends are separated by their captors and Wynn faces a primordial horror on her own. The world is cold but the grave is colder as events race toward a deadly conclusion!
Although this issue marks the end of a story arch, there are still unanswered questions from the opening of Winterworld #1. That's fine with me. It did seem a bit odd, however, that the final page had a title marking the end of the first arch when the first four issues didn't all seem tightly linked by an overall story to begin with. It was really just these last two issues in this oasis – that, of course, turned out to be a mirage – that were really locked together. I suppose it's more Guice's departure and modern comic marketing for eventual trade that formthese issues into a set more than anything. Dixon looks to be employing rotating artists per arc on this ongoing, which makes me think about the nature of an ongoing title at this point in the evolution of comic publishing, especially at IDW. Dixon will surely adapt his script to the artist he is working with, so why not just create a new title and volume per arc? Either way, there's more "Winterworld" coming down the pike and Dixon seems to really enjoy spending time in this universe. It's the best work he's done in years. Read Full Review
