Following the graphic novel Tales From Year Zero, Legendary takes you back to the front lines with Pacific Rim: Tales From The Drift. The official new comic series presented by director Guillermo del Toro and Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham. Prepare to do battle with all-new Kaiju creatures in this thrilling continuation of the Pacific Rim universe. The series comes from writer Joshua Fialkov with artwork by Marcos Marz.
At this point, Tales from the Drift is in such an early state that it's impossible to tell how in-depth it will go when it comes to human character development. Whether we'll see favorite characters like Mako Mori or Newton Geiszler as the comic progresses is anybody's guess, given the time jumps we see in the first issue, but the kaiju-versus-robot action is well worth the price of admission and hopefully the human drama will either be just as interesting or mercifully short. Pacific Rim is at its best when a balance between human drama and monster action is found, and if this team can manage that in the comic book series as well then Tales From the Drift will be in great shape. Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift feeds a starved Pacific Rim fan. While it's difficult to capture the simple but smart nature of its film, the comic tries and highlights a lesser known jaeger crew. Joshua Fialkov makes good use of the material and makes Duc and Kaori a compelling team. Marcos Marz makes jaeger fights compelling, and Marcelo Maiolo delivers with solid colors. While Pacific Rim still struggles to get the recognition it deserves, this is a worthwhile addition for any fan of the franchise. Read Full Review

It isnt a waste of time by any means, but I wouldnt rush out to buy it either. If youre a fan of the universe already, I say pick it up as it does end on a high note. For now, its a solid time passer. Lets hope the next issue adds some much-needed oomph. Read Full Review
While there are some potentially interesting characters and nice use of color in the comic, Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift #1 feels like a whole lot of nothing. It's visually uninteresting and doesn't seem to want to take any risks storywise with its core concept. It's not even empty calories. It's just a straight empty canteen in the desert that is a world without a sequel to Pacific Rim, and that's somehow even more disappointing than if that canteen was just filled with Kaiju Blue.
