Brian Reed and Lee Weeks wouldn't have topped my list for a killer Captain Marvel team (no pun intended), but they certainly make a case for themselves. Reed is increasingly proving that he can easily survive without his frequent writing partner Brian Michael Bendis. Reed's own voice shines through in this issue, particularly with some well-written narration by Mar-Vell. Weeks, despite not qualifying as a very traditional superhero artist, is a near-perfect fit for this mini-series. In many ways Weeks evokes memories of Jim Starlin's work on The Death of Captain Marvel. If this series is eliciting favorable comparisons to that classic story already, I think we're in for a marvelously good time (har har). Read Full Review

All in all, this is a strong start to a series that I didnt believe would have any direction or purpose to it. Marvel has pleasantly surprised me, as has Brian Reed, who did not impress with his work on Spider-Woman and the pointless Illuminati. Reed seems to have a sense of the titles direction, as well as some good ideas for the character, and the comic drips with potential as a result. I was completely impressed with Captain Marvel #1. Now, I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm about this title since I am obviously biased toward Mar-Vell's character. And I want to recommend this title not out of my feelings of nostalgia, but because this is actually a well crafted title worth your money. Read Full Review
This issue is better than I expected, and even if it doesnt really get to the meat of its story just yet, it provides a solid setup and a compelling enough concept that Ill be interested enough to keep following the series for a while yet. It isnt without its problems: the urban legend element of Mar-Vells return never feels like its fully exploited, it would be nice for the big action sequences to actually mean something for the story, and Id like to see Reed explore Mar-Vells character a little more in future issues. However, this is a decent enough first issue that overcomes the stigma of The Return, suggesting that there may be a place for the classic Captain Marvel in the modern Marvel Universe after all. There's some nice imagry here and, I have to admit, I do enjoy seeing the real MarVell again, but I'm still confused as to the point of this aside from Marvel preying on nostalgic fans' desire to see MarVell again. The issue, itself, wasn't bad, per se. In fact, I'd say it was pretty good, but I'm hoping future issues will convince me MarVell's return was worth the effort and that this story won't end up being some cheap cash grab. Read Full Review
All in all, Id say skip this one, unless you like really nice pen and ink work. The story is a non-starter. Go track down those other Captain Marvel books I was talking about earlier if you want a good cosmic story. This story doesnt seem destined for the stars. Read Full Review
