X-23 goes back to Utopia to decide once and for all what side she falls on after the X-Men schism. Guest-starring Jubilee!
This issue is very bittersweet. On one hand it was a great comic; on the other it means that we are one step closer to the final issue. What does that mean for X-23, though? A lot of characters who see their series canceled drop off the face of comics. We often don't know what happens to them for a long time. Liu's writing in this issue reassures her readers that this isn't the last we have seen of X-23 and leaves her character somewhat open-ended. Her book may be coming to an end, but this is definitely not the last we have seen of this character; that's the kind of attitude that Liu exhibits with issue #20of X-23. Pair that with yet another gorgeous issue thanks to the talent of Phil Noto, and you have a hit. New readers should be able to follow along easily, although I recommend that you pick up the series as a whole. Most of it has been solid. Read Full Review
This issue also starts to wrap up the series, with Laura saying good-bye to the characters who have been important to the series, such as Gambit and Wolverine. As she ultimately makes her decision of what team to choose, it is based, however, not on her ties to other people or what she feels like she may owe anyone in loyalty, but instead what she feels is best for her. She's not the weapon she was created to be who only takes orders, nor is she simply a clone of Wolverine, following in his footsteps. She's a strong character with her own motivation and mission, and, if she can't be in her own book, it's good to see she'll at least be sticking around the Marvel U. Read Full Review
"Especially with these two creators on board, the cancellation of this book is a huge loss to comic readers and the diversity of Marvel's line, which will shrivel to zero female led titles when this and "Ghost Rider" end in a couple short months. "X-23" did not always work as well as it does now, which just further goes to prove why it's important for titles like this to be nurtured and given time to find their voice and heart. For "X-23," it has been in the last six or seven months as Noto and Liu paired up to create some exceptional comics. Perhaps we'll see Liu and Noto together again in the future sometime. Liu has brought Laura full circle; acknowledging her controversial past with authenticity, ultimately evolving and solidifying the character. That evolution is evident in X-23 #20, and makes for a really good read. Read Full Review
I'm still really enjoying what little time we have left with X-23, but I must admit that, while this is a good issue, it does suffer from minor missteps at various points along the way. It also probably would have been a tad more exciting if Marvel hadn't already told us a million times that Laura is going to join the Avengers Academy, thus rendering this issue's dilemma as entirely moot.
