This story is told in two formats: short chapters that are loosely connected with an overarching story, and yonkoma: 4-panel comic strips. The yonkoma provide some comic relief peppered throughout the chapters, which usually deliver emotional punches. Sakurai knows how to grab onto the cat-lover’s soul and mix in some touching or devastating tributes that resonate with anyone who has lost an important loved one. Just with volume 1, there are plenty of moments that cat owners will recognize and relate to with their furry family members, as I related to this moment with Fukumaru's war against his own reflection. As with the first volume, Square Enix have used good quality paper and included four colour images at front and back, including one very cute 4-koma page of the cats owner in cosplay. The translation by Taylor Engel continues to give us Fukumarus meowy voice very convincingly: Fukumaru Furry Flurry P-P-P-P-Punch!!!(attacking his own reflection in the mirror, because). Its another nicely produced volume which any cat owner or enthusiast will be happy to own and dip into! I can only hope that in subsequent volumes Umi Sakurai can keep the delicate balance between gentle humour and sentiment just right. Fukumarus personality (more than a little tsundere) will probably go a long way to ensuring his story stays the right side of the line. Read Full Review
