A Comic Book Blog - Victor Kutsenok
May 12, 2011So let's talk opinions. When I first saw this book, I wasn't that crazed over it. However, I am a fan of tattoos and naked chicks. I have seen the web site and do find many of the women there attractive. Therefore I decided to pick up this issue. I was pleasantly surprised. Steve Niles, of 30 Days of Night fame, does an excellent job of pacing this book. The characters are all fresh and interesting. The story isn't too overwhelming. There is some nice action and a decent surprise twist at the end. All excellent qualities for a first issue. That's not what got me hooked though. What really caught my eye was the art. The tattoos in particular. Now tattoos on characters in comics is not a rarity. What is rare, however, is detailed color tattoos on characters. Sana's work was very well done. All of the girl's work was. The art in general is very nice. Nice big bold colors but with a surprising amount of details. Frank's back piercings/sword hilt was an awesome touch too. Apr 26, 2011Heres a thinker for you: how do you take a website whose purpose is basically images of women of unconventional beauty and find a way to tell a story with them? The answer, it seems, is to cast them as resistance fighters in a post-apocalyptic landscape! DUH. Here we meet Frank, a young woman imprisoned by the ubiquitous Way*of*Life corporation, until she gets busted out by a few ladies claiming to be members of the mythical Suicide Girls. To be fair, the storytellers have found an interesting way to take the core concept of the property and convert that into something that has an actual story to it, and Brea Grant is particularly good as a scripter. The story itself is pretty by-the-book though: evil corporations, rebel freedom fighters, newcomer with a secret nothing we havent really seen before. Its the connection to the Suicide Girls that makes the book stand out. David Hahn, fortunately, is a great choice to help make that script stand out.
