Some of the nudity is the only thing I feel keeps it from getting a wider release that it deserves. Otherwise the messages are sound and clear. Alcohol is nothing more than a plot device, the pain of chasing the emotion and passion sparked long ago is the real drug that fuels bad decisions is a recurring theme. And, of course, this is all so complemented by Dean Haspiels intricately detailed and sometimes loosely rendered yet so expressive visual characterization, careful choices and panel-to-panel pacing. "The Alcoholic" isn't a perfect graphic novel -- and I don't know that there's all that much about it that wouldn't have worked as a straight-up prose story -- but Haspiel's art is dynamic and bold, and Ames's unique narrative voice makes it worth reading for sure. Read Full Review
