Animosity Vol. 1: The Wake

  A not bad, but flawed piece about a Bloodhound named Sandor escorting his human girl after the Wake, which is an unexplained event where all animals gain sentience. The characters are very keeping with the times. In the 90s the cool thing to do as a comic writer was to make everything edgy. It went downhill quickly because writers were doing it for its own sake. This book is an example of social awareness being the cool ting for comic writers to do in the 2010s. Almost all of the characters are gay or trans, including a non binary cat, because tolarance! It hasn't been since Matt Fraction's trans moloid in Fantastic Four that I have seen such a blatant example of "hey look how tolerant I am! This book is super tolerant! I'm progressive! Will daddy love me now?" I feel like under all the social commentary there is a cool animal farm meets y the last man thing going on, but too much of the story is done for the sake of cute, it wants to preach social politics more than storytell at times, and ultimately there seems to be not nearly enough world building. The few moments where the repercussions of this new world are discussed are interesting, but sadly too few and far between. more
