This new volume by Dan Watters is a great introduction to the new status quo in Blüdhaven. The gangs have lost their bosses, the police force has been reinforced with military technology, and a mysterious figure in the shadows is taking the necessary steps to make Blüdhaven burn.
The new villain has a lot of potential, especially with the circus-cult theme, and I enjoyed Dexter Soy's artwork, particularly during the horror and suspense sequences.
I'm not entirely convinced by where the story is headed, though. This volume does a good job of establishing the characters, but it doesn't provide enough information to make the new villain truly compelling. This run has been sleepy. It's not worth buying the monthly series, it's too expensive for the low quality of the story, and even the TPB is getting expensive.
The way DC is going, with eyes only on Absolute, I really think this run might cancel Nightwing if it doesn't change completely.
It feels like a filler comic, there's no interest from the writer in telling an interesting story or trying to make the characters interesting.
Who cares about Zanni? Who cares about Olivia?
I didn't want to say this.............but I'm starting to miss Tom Taylor.
