Too Much Dialogue, Too Much Wandering… and Barely Any X-Men Left!
Rating: 2/10
Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men continues to be a massive disappointment. Issue #21 concludes Murder Me, Mutina, an arc that perfectly illustrates everything wrong with this series so far.
The biggest problem is the excessive focus on the Outliers. Introducing new mutants is perfectly fine,
but not at the expense of legendary characters like Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee. These experienced X-Men have decades of history, fascinating personalities, and incredible powers, yet they increasingly feel like supporting characters in their own comic.
The pacing is painfully slow. Simone fills the pages with endless dialogue, emotional discussions, and scattered subplots, but very little meaningful progress. Too often, characters talk about their feelings without making decisions that actually move the story forward.
The promised sense of family at Haven House is also far less convincing than it should be. The veteran X-Men rarely seem to function as a truly cohesive team, and their experience, leadership, and individual abilities remain frustratingly underused.
Rogue and Gambit deserve more than repetitive emotional conversations. Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee deserve meaningful roles, independent initiatives, and opportunities to demonstrate what makes them extraordinary X-Men.
Mutina herself has intriguing potential, and some of the mysteries surrounding Haven House could eventually lead somewhere interesting. Unfortunately, interesting ideas are not enough when the execution feels so unfocused and unnecessarily drawn out.
With such an exceptional cast, this series should be delivering compelling team adventures, meaningful character development, and genuine narrative momentum.
Instead, we get endless setup, too little payoff, and veteran X-Men who seem increasingly irrelevant to their own story.
An enormous waste of potential.
