I like goofy shit. If you want proof, it’s in the pull list. However, this one wasn’t in my pull list. This was an impulse buy and going in I had no expectations. My only thought was “it’s a one shot, why not?”
The premise is pretty easy to sum up, they do it on the inside of the cover:
Two cops: one of them is a robot- only they don’t know which!
That’s how the story opens, with the police chief telling two cops that one of them is a robot, they just don’t know who it is. The book does some things pretty well. Quantick seems like he is good at reusing the same joke to good effect (similar to “You know how I know you are gay” from 40 Year Old Virgin). One of the strengths of this book as it make no sense at all, I mean there is a police shootout with a gang that includes a ghost, a leprechaun, Frankenstein’s monster, an astronaut, a cowboy, and a skeleton. I found my self laughing out loud multiple times and the art is fantastic and fits the story. I should love this, but I don’t.
There is a lot of wasted time. This is a decently size comic and despite being a one shot, it ends on a cliff hanger when it had the time to wrap the story up. This would have been a better story if it wrapped up like a Scooby Doo episode and I think it would have fit the tone perfectly. I almost feel like I am being too harsh for such a silly story, but they had the pages to do it. There are three double page spreads in a row (including a pin-up) that is only there to showcase the gang of stooges I mentioned earlier. That is a lot of space that could have been use to tidy up the story.
I don’t regret getting it, but if a friend had the story, I would probably just have borrowed it. It does look like it nearly sold out, so if you want to drop the cash, maybe it’ll be a good choice. At the end of the day, I didn’t love this story, but I do like it. But hey, maybe I’m a robot…
