John Constantine: Hellblazer #12

I love Delano's and Ennis's Hellblazer runs. This one was better. It's possible the comics market isn't big enough to support this sort of book anymore, which is a shame, because I wrapped up this story looking at the final black page and cursing that this was it. The story ends at a point that someone else can pick up from in the future, but it will be a real shame if Spurrier/Campbell aren't involved in the next chapter. Regardless, I'd expect several of the elements from this story to impact Constantine stories in the future. |

Kirkman's character work is phenomenal. Owen's family life is completely recognizable, except for the random martial arts battles that appear at random moments (in this issue, a date night). This series is a joy to read and I'm eagerly anticipating the next issue. I'll be miserable if Kirkman harms Kellie, though! |

Suicide Squad (2019) #11

The Ted Kord/Black Mask surprise was satisfying. Several of the Revolutionaries ended up being satisfying characters that I hope to see again (like Super-Man (Kong Kenan) and Silencer). I'm intrigued by Wink's relationship to the Black Racer. And I enjoyed Tom Taylor's banter. The ending felt a little rushed, but I can't blame Taylor for trying to wrap things up since issue 11 is a really odd number to end on. This felt like the fun Suicide Squad squad of the original Ostrander era, and it's a real shame that it didn't take off. I understand the criticism of using new characters created just for this run instead of known ones, but for a change, the stakes actually felt real issue to issue. If/when Suicide Squad returns, I hope the next writer doesn't just play it safe. This was miles above the Williams run. |
