Trillium #5

Dec 6, 2013

The juxtaposition of Zeppelin-lined London and strange sci-fi surroundings on practically every page highlights how impressive and imaginative Lemire's artwork is; the structure produces some stunning pages. Retaining his trademark rough style, Lemire can express a lot of emotion with very little, this ability contributes immensely to his storytelling. Mention should also go to Jose Villarrubia whose more lush colours help differentiate the tones of our parallel narratives.

Journey Into Mystery (2011) #655

Aug 31, 2013

While perhaps not the ideal ending for the run, this is a fine ending to the storyline. This distinction makes it all the more bittersweet that Sif's time in the spotlight is finished. She'll be missed.

Astro City (2013) #4

Speaking of the Majordomo, Anderson's design work really shines in this issue. The aforementioned villain's costume is appropriately ludicrous, with a Bison-like cape and a dashing sci-fi monocle. Despite the ridiculousness he wouldn't look too far out of place next to some of the more excessive mainstream characters. Martha's flashback forays are similarly revealing in terms of artwork. Excellent design and storytelling elements such as this make up for the occasionally slack figure and facial work.

The storyline has gained some forward momentum, and Gillen has set up the conclusion nicely, but it is the two at the centre of this conflict that keep it from being simply by-the-numbers.

Angel & Faith Season 9 #25

Aug 31, 2013

Nonetheless the post-action denouement is well drawn and has some enjoyable character moments. While the dialogue can occasionally be too on the nose or, briefly, overly saccharine, the conclusion manages to be both logical and full of promise for future stories.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #25

Jeanty's work is strong in this issue. Characters emotion's are evoked well and the Deeper Well panels are brimming with energy. Jeanty has been a consistent worker, and this issue has some stand out panels for which he should be lauded.

God is Dead #1

Sep 6, 2013

Hickman and Costa are talented enough writers to turn this into something worthwhile, but #1 doesn't raise hopes. Their Gods are alive. They're just laughable.
