Ms. Marvel (2014) #3

Apr 18, 2014

Ms. Marvel is a competent yet underwhelming look at the beginning of a teen superheroine. It will likely have special appeal to newer, younger readers, especially girls and particularly those with the same Islamic background as the main character, but can be enjoyed by everyone who enjoys a fresh hero's origin story.

Hit: 1957 #1

Mar 26, 2015

Hit: 1957 #1 contains thrilling scenes, but suffers from a lack of focused storytelling. Enthusiasts of the previous series will be eager to pick up this continuation of Hit. Those who missed it, however, are likely to feel lost. There is enough going on here, though, to whet the appetite of readers who enjoy murky noir tales of ruthless criminals and equally ruthless cops.

Justice League United #1

May 15, 2014

Justice League United isn't yet everything that readers may have hoped for, but it does show a lot of promise! If the clichs can be dropped and the layouts are slightly improved, it could become a very strong title.

Convergence: Wonder Woman #1

Apr 24, 2015

Regardless of whether you're reading Convergence, Wonder Woman fans should check out this rare visit an almost forgotten piece of this character's history. What I appreciate most about this issue is that Hama understands Wonder Woman and delivers a story worthy of this character. I've been vocal in my disappointment with how Meredith and David Finch have handled her recently, so Convergence Wonder Woman is a refreshing return for fans of this character. Middleton's work on art is also commendable, and I'll be keeping an eye out for other projects by him. With event after event going on, it's nice to be able to pick up a tie-in like this that can be enjoyed on its own.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (2010) #201

Apr 22, 2014

Items of special interest: This issue marks the return of Hama to the letters page, Postbox: The PIT, which was just brought back last issue after a long hiatus. For the second consecutive month, the rapper, Wordburglar, who is a serious GI Joe enthusiast, has a letter printed. Joe fans will want to check out his album Welcome to Cobra Island, which is full of GI Joe references and samples from the cartoons music cues.

Self-Obsessed One Shot #1

Apr 1, 2014

Self-Obsessed is a gutsy comic that is not offered up very frequently by mainstream publishers. Like Bob Fingerman's Minimum Wage, (also from Image comics) Sina Grace's Self-Obsessed presents comic readers with real life stories from actual comic creators " their triumphs along with their struggles " and helps fans appreciate just how much goes into creating these "funnies."

Winterworld #0

Mar 5, 2015

This issue is a great introduction for readers new to this series, and gives devotees a better understanding of the characters and climate of Winterworld. The next issue won't be out until May, but you don't have to be left out in the cold until then! There is much more Winterworld material out there. Chuck Dixon has a novel out called Winterworld: The Mechanic's Song, as well as trades collecting the first four issues of this series, and another collecting the original miniseries.

The Auteur: Sister Bambi #1

May 12, 2015

As it reads on the credit page, The Auteur: Sister Bambi #1, is not for "the weak or immature." What Spears, Callahan and their collaborators have put together is a decidedly adult book. That said, it is also one of the most playful, bizarre and hilarious comics currently on the stands.

Jupiter's Circle #1

Apr 7, 2015

Although Jupiter's Circle enriches the story of Jupiter's Legacy, this series is one that can firmly stand on its own considerable merit. In fact, I would say that this comic is off to a stronger start that the original. Whether you are eagerly awaiting the continuation of Jupiter's Legacy, have waited for its first trade volume (also out this week), or neither, I recommend that you pick up Jupiter's Circle #1 right away!
