Cable and X-Force #1 |
Dec 19, 2012
show

|
Vibrant art, vibrant writing. That's the best way to describe Cable and X-Force. There is a lot of dynamic here that Larroca, Hopeless, and D'Armata bring to the comic, but this doesn't mean that it's a perfect book.

Ultimately, this was also nicely put together. The printed cover has a threadbare like quality to it, and the insides scream 1920′s advertising. What is cool is that the publication design was by Chip Kidd himself.

Batman: Earth One #1 |
Jul 28, 2012

Exactly the same asSuperman: Earth One, with art printed on a textured cover and a black band going down the side with title and credits. For the cover price of 22.99, it's a nice job. Even if it is up two bucks fromSuperman: Earth One, it's still cheaper thanMarvel Season One titles. And I would say for the current price on Amazon for 13 and change, very much worth it.

Massively Effective #1 |
Mar 25, 2012
show
|
|
Final Words: Generally, we always review things from, well, let's call it the Big 3"Marvel, DC, and Image. Boom!and Top Cow show up regularly too. But this comic does not yet have a home and really needs one"if the first issue of the series is any indication as to what the future holds for Massively Effective, publishers should jump on this thing. So, go over to Atomic Rex and click on "online comics" for a free read of issue one. You'll be glad you did. Until then, I guess we'll have to wait for issue two to hit the comic stores. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Detective Comics #3 |

Despite being only three issues into the series, this is the first weak issue produced. While heavy on the action, the plot moved slowly, maybe because the first two issues had subplots dealing with Bruce Wayne, whereas this issue"taking place all in one night"only focused on his alter ego.

X-Men: First to Last HC #1 |
Nov 02, 2011
show
|
|
Despite a plot hole or two, this is an excellent story with great art. I hope Yost does write Uncanny some day–he (and Craig Kyle) has the strongest grasp on these characters right now. And it's also cool to see Cyclops develop his own nemesis, one that doesn't really care much about the X-Men as he does just wanting to kill Scott Summers.

Suicide Squad #2 |

show

They tease that characters are going to die and it's clear they are putting much more focus on the four listed above. Deadshot, Diablo, King Shark, and Harley Quinn. Don't they make kind of a sick and twisted Fantastic Four? We have one guy who has flame powers (but not as chipper), one genius in his field (but can't stretch), one goofy tank (but not as morally grounded) and one, um, chick (that's not as hot. Hey, I like blondes). I'm on to you, DC…. I'm on to you.

I know Tony Daniel has had some mixed reviews in the past, but this is a good series so far and issue two was in some ways even better than issue one. His Batman is still Batman, but he's taking other risks that are slowly coming to light. I'm looking forward to more.

Deathstroke #1 |

I'm hoping Higgins and Bennett can keep this up. Seeing a story from a villain's perspective is always a bit refreshing. I was also happy to see nomajor DC characters in this. Superman doesn't show up, Batman is nowhere to be found. It's all Deathstroke's show and no one else's.

Final Thoughts: I love the Thunderbolts, and I wouldn't mind a DC version of it, but this issue started on the wrong foot…in the wrong town. I'll try it for a little while longer and see how the future issues turn out. Maybe it's misguided, but I still have a little faith in this title still.

Scarlet HC- Graphic Novel #1 |
Jul 13, 2011
show
|
|
Other stuff: Scarlet is a very special character, so Scarlet should have a very special look. And it does. Instead of the typical hardcover with a slip jacket, we get the cover printed right on the book. And though the 24.99 price tag might seem excessive for a 5-issue collection, it does come with the entire first script from Bendis"including a letter from him to Maleev about the character and story, which is great to read; and it includes Maleev's sketchbook for the first issue. That might not excite everyone, but it's great to see the creative process. I know my students will appreciate it"because Scarlet just became part of my syllabus.

Uncanny X-Force: The Apocalypse Sollution HC #1 |

I can't wait for more from Remender, and I hope Opena joins him again. Though it would be hard for Remender to top The Apocalypse Solution, if he wrote even at half this quality, he'd still be turning out some of the best comics in the business. And the Apocalypse story is far from over"as he says it will be the focus of the first year and a half of the series. If The Apocalypse Solution is any indication, it's going to be a great epic when he's finished.

The Cape #1 |
Jan 25, 2011
show
|
|
I have to assume the writers, directors, producers, actors, hell, even the catering services manager, sat around with one topic on their minds: “How can we make a show so horrible that the only way people can enjoy it is to tweet insults during it like it's a new age Mystery Science Theater.” Otherwise, how can so many supposedly talented people create something that is so awful? How? Because the only thing I know for sure about the Cape as a show is that it proves that atheists are right.
